ell, it’s sort of like Worms | suppose, so that might mean it appeals to some people, and the fact that it only costs £7 will maybe mean that the more affluent among you can afford to take a risk on it, but apart from those two groups, | can’t really see anyone else being happy with the expense they’ve gone to (or at least not bothered about it).

You have ‘Spuds’ instead of worms and instead of being turn based the game is played out in real time. Might sound like a good idea | know, but it doesn’t really work because you quickly get frustrated at trying to move around the screen (with particularly bad mouse control), aim and fire all at the same as trying to keep an eye on what your opponent (be it computer or split screen two player) is up to.

all of which have a supposedly different use, and the game consists mainly of two ‘Spuds’ hammering towards each other firing off random missiles. Not much fun, and while | accept there may be a lot more to it once you get past the initial levels | can’t see anybody having the patience or interest to progress any further. Mash started in the public domain and as far as | can see that is where it should have stayed well and truly rooted.

The programmer claims two years development time but it really is difficult to see where that time has been invested, and it certainly wasn’t wisely! He also states that the game has undergone six different reprogrammings, but is this really anything to boast about? Surely this means that six times he thought ‘Hang on, this is appalling, I’d better scrap it and start again’. If this is so much better than his previous efforts then I’m glad | didn’t have to sit through those as well.

After every three levels there’s a bonus level (Mash Invaders) which can be quite fun, but it’s really not enough to save this from utmost mediocrity. | realise there’s not a lot of choice out there these days for Amiga owners but does

Katzma Software’s first ever game features YOU, as Darryl, proving to your mates that you ain’t no chicken. And how do you do it? Why you lurch about on the M11 of course, doing your utmost to avoid becoming jam.

Not perhaps amusing to the parents of children who may have died performing stunts like this, it is nontheless great fun to

play (and let’s face it, anyone stupid enough to try something like this deserves everything they get!). Darryl, dressed sportily in a bright pink top, needs to cross the road a la Frogger between the speeding cars. Once across, a jubilant “Yo!” signifies his exuberance, and he goes for it again. And again and again.

Get hit by a car and young dead Darryl will lie in the road with half of his face missing, and cross successfully often enough to be rewarded with a score bonus and even faster cars. It’s the kind of thing which will become boring after about 20 minutes but may prove a treat if your leathered off your face. Which, really, is entertainment enough.

generation. In fact, the only generation they represent is generation X, ‘X’ is this case signifying an X-rating, and therefore worthy of a ban. But hey! — it’s the gameplay that counts.

Oh dear. A power/shot bar exists, and is (o) MUL om lame) al cM(clalcom olelerelU (om 7010 merlame (cvel(e(>) on the strength of shot you wish to play through its utilisation. Except, it doesn’t seem to make any difference, and you ball invariably ends up approximately 10 computer yards ahead of the miniscule sprite. It’s absolute dross, in other words.

ALIEN- BASH 2

A game with such a dodgy and clichéd title needs to be absolutely tremendous if it is to overcome to stigmas placed upon it by its creators, and Alien Bash 2 actually is. Well, maybe “absolutely tremendous” is going too far but this is one of the best quality games you're likely to come across in the public domain. Ooh.

It’s like the Chaos Engine, only it doesn’t look quite as good. No disgrace there of course, and no real problem that it’s a one- player only affair either. Not when for a couple of quid you get a game which looks as nice as this and plays so well. Wander around, shoot aliens, collect stuff and shoot more aliens. Remember Watchtower reviewed in AA a few months ago and released at full price? Well, this is better. By quite a considerable margain.

Hmm. Imagine Hired Guns, which in the opinion of this humble reviewer was not much cop. Now imagine something which tried to be like that but was much, much worse. Now, imagine a game which, even in its wildest dreams, is incapable of attaining the dizzy depths of turdity which tHe worse one attained. Now imagine if it was called Fever.

The control method is one of utmost tedious torture — the kind of thing which was unacceptable a decade ago with clickable arrows which take you a couple of steps in the direction you wish to travel. Soundwise it’s actually not all that bad, but the graphics are abysmal and the gameplay makes a snail seem like a contender for pole position in a Formula One Grand Prix.

First of all turn round and take the cement from the tomb. Now use it on one of the cracks in the floor and you will be able to escape from your watery prison. Then pick up the monocle and the hair grip which have been left conveniently lying around. Now press the button below one of the plants, and an apple will magically appear.

Take the apple to the top of the room and place it on the tree stump (after having removed and read the book which is there). Now pick up the cement and look underneath the drain where you should find some seeds. Pick up the seeds and then go to the bottom of the room. Next to the body in the coffin there is a drain. Open this drain and take the arrow.

Then place the arrow on the crossbow and flick the lever above it. One swift scene from William Tell later and you should find a sweet

amongst the remains of the Granny Smith. Take this sweet and give it to the toffee-loving skull. Now take the Drink of Sight and the Greenfingers Solution.

Now go to the bottom of the room and pick up the silver key. Downing the Drink of Sight at this point will make a door appear which can then be opened with the key. Walk down the new passage and pick up the book with the tree on the cover. This piece of literature comes in very useful as it contains essential information about the bodies you will

come across in the crypt. Go to the left of ™ the new room and pick = up the bag of sand.

Take this flower to the first room, place it in the vase and take the Ring of Goodwill and the poetry. Return to the second room and place the Ring of Goodwill on the Altar of Dispute. Cross the water via the bridge, pick up the strange drama and flick the lever. You should now be able to open the door to the left of the first room with the hair grip. The door will close behind you but don’t worry about it.

Go to the bottom of the new room but DO NOT walk directly onto the square in front of the golden sweet. If you do, the sweet will disappear and will not come back! Instead, pick up the kettle, look under the drain and read the book which you find there. You should now realise why the sweet keeps disappearing. In order to grab this golden artefact you will need to drop the bag of sand in front of it. The bag will split open and you will be able to soft shoe shuffle your way to the toffee. Pick up the sweet and then go to the upper room where you should find a lever on the wall and a grill. Flick the lever and pick up the match to the left of the chamber. Then drop the kettle underneath the water spout and press the tap. Now put the full kettle on the grill and when it boils the whistling sound should break the glass case covering the key.

Take the key and then replace the kettle on the grill with the match. Pick the match up again when it has lit. Now open the door which shut behind you with the key and leave the room.

Give the golden sweet to the toffee lover next to the bow! of soil and then pick up the Miracle drink. Now go and place the poetry on the Poet's tomb and drink the Miracle Potion. Give this sweet to the toffee lover at the top right of this room (the one on the left is a trap), and take the cannon ball which appears. You can leave the stamina bottle where it is unless you really do need it.

Now go to the cannon and place the cannon ball in the front of it. Put the lighted match next to the fuse and the boulder which had previously been blocking the passageway should now be blown away.

Enter this new passageway and look underneath the first drain that you come across. Take the quill which you find and place it in the ink well. Now take the Globe of Wisdom and the Hercules drink.

Go back down the passageway and take the cross from Uncle George’s coffin, replacing it with the monocle. Now place the strange drama on the

coffin and the multilingual George will translate it into an English drama. Pick it up again and then return to Grandad’s coffin. Drink the Hercules drink and pick up the piano. Now go and place the piano on the Musician’s tomb. Get the prince to face the keyboard section of the piano and instruct him to use it. After a particularly tuneless rendition of something or other, a lever will = then appear on the wall » behind you. Flick the & switch and go & through the doorway which has now opened at the bottom of the room.

Drink the Greenfingers drink _ and then take the leaf

from the bottom left plant (touching the leaves of the other three plants will cause you to lose stamina). Then place the leaf in the Herbalist’s Bowl and take the Healing Potion. Now go to the River Keeper in the room where you found the golden toffee and look at the Globe of Wisdom in your inventory. He will then let you cross the river where you can find Shakespeare’s drink. Guide the Prince to Lord Monty’s coffin and

give him the English drama. Drink Shakespeare’s potion and look at the drama. One brief stab of culture later, Lord Monty's eyes will open. If you look at him now he will tell you that he aches all over. Give him the Healing potion and he will return your favour by giving you an Official Plate. Take the plate and return to the room where you took the herbalist leaf from the plant.

At the top left of this room is a sweet which can’t be reached because of a hole in the floor. Use some cement to seal this crack and then take the sweet. Give this toffee to the toffee lover next to Uncle George’s coffin, then take the teddy bear and the Choral drink. Now give the teddy to the body next to the herb plants and take the key which you are given in return.

Go back to the room where you found Grandad’s coffin and pick up the song which can be found to the left of the chamber. Then place the song on the Singer’s tomb and drink the Choral drink. Look at the song and after the Prince has launched into a brief tune, return to the herb plant room. The door at the bottom of this chamber is now open and you should walk through it.

Look under the drain at the bottom of the new room and take the Royal Seal which you discover. Then use the key to open the door | which closed | behind you. Now return to the } room where you | found Grandad's | coffin and place | the Royal Seal on ! the Royal Note. | Take the | Wizard’s Wand and the Lucky Heather.

Few people on the AA team read the pages, and consequently the Son of Boggit changed from a promising character-based adventure help section, to a rambling nonsensical jumble of re- used letters and tired, formulaic solutions. In time, the money allocated to Neil was cancalled, and Neil contented himself with spending seven hours a day changing the context of printer reviews, and occasionally adding a sentence to the end of a piece on the latest computerised roadmap ...
