PREFATORY NOTE.
The compiler of the present monograph desires to express his obligations for much help rendered him at home and abroad. INTRODUCTION.
Biographical Details.
HE parentage of Verard and his career before the appearance of his first book in 1485 is en- tirely unknown. An attempt has been made to conneft him with one Jean-Pierre de Verade, to whom a " permission de tester " was granted by Charles VIII. in 1497/ but there are in- superable difficulties of date.^* There are indi- cations conne6ling Verard with Touraine, for he published two books having relation to the province, a Coutumiery and the Chateau de Virginite of Georges de Esclavonie, a native of Tours. More- over, according to a document published by Dr. E. Giraudet,* he bought in 1505 a house in that town, and, as we learn from another document published by M. Ch. Grandmaison,* he had an agency at Tours for the sale of his books.
The colophons of his books afford but little information as to his subsequent existence, except that in 1 506 he enjoys the title of

" Libraire jure de TUniversite." ' In January, 1 507[o8]/ he obtains a " privilege " for three years from the king, forbidding any other printer or bookseller to print his books, under pain of confiscation. All Verard's books that have the privilege in the colophon are also dated, for legal purposes no doubt, so that any book without a privi- lege may be supposed to have been issued before January, 1 507[o8]. The only exception to this is the Orose of 1 509, but this is merely a reprint of an earlier edition of Verard's, and perhaps for this reason did not require or could not be admitted to privilege. This grant of " privilege " would appear to have been unexpeftedly received, since the Nef de Sante of 1508, issued in two forms (Nos. 85, 177), one with date and privilege, the other with neither.
The death of Verard cannot be fixed with any certainty. The last dated book printed for him (vol. 5 of the Grandes Pastilles, No. 99) appeared in August, 1512, and he was no longer alive in 15 14, since in that year the privilege of an edition of the Chroniques de Saint Denis, printed by Guillaume Eustace, applies to him the epithet y^«. The date of his death has however been placed by some as far back as the beginning of 1 5 1 2. This theory is based on the existence of several books (j^^Nos. 9, 108, 147, 163) bearing the following MS. note : " Anthoine Verard libraire de Paris a donne ce pht liure le xx' de mars V^ & onze au monastere de clervaulx. priez dieu po'' luy ". If these books were a bequest, the question is settled, but they may merely have been a present in Verard's lifetime — the concluding formula proves nothing to the contrary. We know from Lacroix du Maine ' that there was a Claude Verard at Cler- vaulx, and it was on his account no doubt that the bequest or gift was made. But it must be admitted, in favour of those who hold the theory of bequest, that the appearance of Verard's name in a colophon of August, 1512, proves very little, as will become evident when we have to deal with the publications of his successors.

Site of V^rard's Establishment.
The colophons of Verard's books, though often bearing no date, afford nevertheless a clue to a chronological classification, on account of the variations of the address, which is nearly always given. Thus up to Odtober, 1499, he occupied an establishment on the Pont Notre Dame and a shop in the Sainte Chapelle. The bridge collapsed on Odtober 25th, 1499, whereupon, still keeping his second establishment, Verard changed his first to an address which appears variously as " Pres Petit Pont," " rue Saint Jacques pres Petit Pont," " Carrefour Saint-Severin," " Petit Pont pres du Carrefour Saint-Severin," and " Petit Pont devant la rue Notre Dame." It has been generally supposed that the address " Carrefour S. Severin " represents a separate and earlier establishment, which was only used till September, 1500, but this conflicts with the colophon of a Hora (No. 226), which bears the date August i8th, 1502, and the address "Carrefour Saint- Severin." Verard's next move was in September, 1503, to an address which generally appears under the form " devant la rue Neuve Notre Dame," but is also described as " devant la grande eglise Notre Dame," " Pres I'ostel Dieu devant la rue Neuve Notre Dame," and " Devant Notre Dame." The Froissart of 1518 [No. 282], published by Verard's successors, gives the alternative forms " devant la rue Neuve Notre Dame " and " rue de la Juiverie."
The colophon of one book, the Proprietaire (No. 146), bears a curious evidence of this change of address, as a blank space is left between the words " demourant a Paris " and " Au palais au premier pillier, etc." Again, in a vellum copy of the Tresor de rdme (No. 129), the word sur in the expression sur le pont of the colo- phon has been erased, and tout deuant written in.
Publications. — Vellum Copies.
The nature and extent of Verard's publications may be gathered from the bibliographical list in the present volume. They are all in the vernacular except some of the Hora and one of his latest

dated books, the Liber auSioritatum (No. 102). The latter is also the only one printed with type of the kind then generally used for Latin books. His publications may be roughly divided into (i) Books of devotion ; (2) Books of chivalry ; (3) Poems and light literature, chiefly amatory ; (4) Quasi-scientific books ; (5) Trans- lations of the Classics. There is nothing in Latin or Greek — the Renaissance had hardly reached France in Verard's time. The typography and illustrations of Verard's books, though justly cele- brated, are distindlly inferior to the best productions of certain Parisian printers, for instance Jean Dupre, but in one respedt he is without a rival — in the sumptuous illuminated copies on vellum, produced for his royal and other distinguished patrons. The Bibliotheque Nationale at Paris contains an astonishing number of these magnificent books, done for Charles VIIL, Louis XL, and Anne of Brittany. Charles VIIL's copy of the Chroniques de France contains, according to Van Praet, no less than 951 minia- tures. At the British Museum also are numerous volumes only less magnificent, colledled by Henry VIL, whose name is some- times substituted in MS. for that of Charles VIIL in dedication or prologue {jsee No. 37).
The costliness of this elaborate ornamentation appears from a bill sent in by Verard to his patron, the Comte d'Angouleme, which will be found in the Appendix to the present work.^ This document is of particular interest, because the Bibliotheque Nationale, where it rests, also contains an inventory of the efFefts of Verard's patron, the Comte d'Angouleme, made at Cognac on November 20th and 21st, 1496, after his death on January ist in that year, as well as the books themselves, which, being inherited by Francis I., passed into the Bibliotheque du Roi, and so into the Bibliotheque Nationale. The two documents and the books, therefore, throw considerable light on the details of Verard's bill. Ft)r most of the following details we are indebted to an article by M. We shall discover that various errors occur in the account ; but as the total is the same as that arrived at from the corredted figures, it may be supposed that the bill has survived only in an incorredt transcript. Notes on the five books mentioned are here appended.
"Tristan. — The first volume only of this survives in the Biblio- theque Nationale (No. 130 in the List at end). It is undated, but from its occurrence in the inventory, must have been printed before 1496. The description there given of it, as bound in " veloux tanne" is now no longer accurate. Verard appears to cheat himself with regard to this volume, which has ninety-one, not eighty-one leaves (IIII''='XI not IIII"I), but errs in the opposite diredtion in charging for eighty-five instead of eighty-one small illustrations.
Le Grant Boece de Consolacion (No. 37 in the List). — This volume is in the Bibliotheque Nationale, though despoiled of its veloux tanne, and of a blank leaf which, of course, Verard has charged for.
U Ordinaire des Crestiens (No. 39 in the List). — This volume
is in the Bibliotheque, lacking its cover of veloux tanne and" its
fermoers (clasps). In the same library is another vellum' copy of
this book, illuminated for Charles VIII., though on a more modest
scale.
UOrloge de Devocion. — Dealing with this book as with the pre- ceding, we are soon brought to a stop. The inventory men- tions no such book, but does mention an Orloge de Sapience. Moreover, Verard, so far as is known, never published an edition of the former work, though he did of the second. The Biblio- theque Nationale, again, possesses three copies on vellum of an edition of the Orloge de Sapience published by Verard in 1493, a date which would admit of the book being supplied to the Comte d'Angouleme. So far, it would appear that Verard or his clerk has made a mistake. The details, however, point to a different conclusion. The work mentioned in the bill appears to consist of twenty-two leaves of parchment at twenty deniers a

sheet, whereas the Orloge de Sapience is made up of twenty sheets of the same size as the Boece and the Ordinaire des Crestiens, costing therefore two sous six deniers a sheet.
Again, it is quite possible that the Orloge de Sapience of the inventory is not in the bill at all, not falling within the period covered by it. The fad: of the Orloge de Devocion being in the bill and not in the inventory may be explained on the supposition that it was kept by the count's widow, Louise of Savoy, for her personal use.
Another hypothesis — probably the right one — is that the book in the bill is correftly called the Orloge de Devocion, but that in this instance Verard used a volume from a rival establishment. Now there does exist an edition of the Orloge de Devocion nearly corresponding to Verard's description. Its title runs : UOreloge de Devocion, compost en franpys par messire "Jehan ^entin, and it was printed at Paris for M. E. Jehannot. The copy of this book at the Bibliotheque Nationale actually contains the required number (twenty-five) of miniatures ; but the number of leaves (ninety- four) presents a difficulty, for the twenty-two " feuilles " (quarto sheets) in the bill would only make eighty-eight leaves (feuillets).
Heures en frangoys. — There is at the Bibliotheque Nationale an undated Verard Hora (No. 223) containing the necessary 108 leaves (= twenty-seven sheets), which may well have been pub- lished before 1496, and is possibly the book alluded to. The miniatures in this copy do not correspond to the description in the bill, but it was not a priori probable that the Comte d'Angouleme's Horce would be with the other books in the library, since they would probably be retained for the use of his widow.
Among Verard's royal patrons was a foreign king — Henry VII. of England — for whom a large number of vellum copies were illuminated, many of which are still to be seen in the British Museum. It was hoped that a search through the Household and Wardrobe accounts of this monarch preserved at the Record Office might affiord some interesting details. One entry only relating to Verard can be found, namely, in the Account Books of John Heron,

Treasurer of the Chamber, under date i8th June, 17th Hen. VII, (1501-2) :
" Item to Anthony Verard for two bokes called the gardyn of helth .... ^6."
This refers, of course, to the Ortus Sanitatis (No. 140), and the identical copy (in two parts) is still in the British Museum. It is not printed on vellum.
It is somewhat surprising that special vellum copies illuminated for Henry VII. should have passed out of his possession and be found in this century in the Bibliotheque Nationale {Homelies de S. Gr^goire, No. 66) or Osterley Park Library {Bt7>/e des Poetes, No. 31).
Various books, formerly in the library of Henry VIII., published by Verard, were doubtless supplied by him to tha't monarch.
Printer or Publisher .?
In the foregoing remarks we have taken for granted that Verard was a publisher, but the view has been strenuously supported, and cannot be so summarily put aside, that he was a printer also. The doubt has arisen from the wording of the colophons, which might have been expedted to decide the question.
Of the 253 works or editions hereinafter described, only twenty- eight profess themselves printed "par Antoine Verard" No distin- guishing feature is apparent in these, so that their phrasing cannot be due to the whim of a particular printer. The Miroir Historial of 1495-6 (No. 42) exhibits both forms, in vol. i *'■ imprime four" 2S\i. in vol. 5 '■'■ imprime par" while the intervening volumes are merely stated to be '■'■ imprtme a Paris" The colophon of the Martilloge des faulces langues (No. 1 18) seems to point clearly to Verard'spart in the produ6tion of a book. The MS. being sent to him, he looks it over, shows it to various men of learning, by whom it is corred:ed, and determines to get it printed {faire imprimer).
On the other hand, in the introduction to the Temple d'honneur (No. 189), which contains no colophon, it is stated with equal clearness that the MS. was " sent to Antoine Verard, a bookseller

in Paris, who thought well to put it on his printers' formes (?) [ses formes impressoires) and to publish it abroad."
The Hora exhibit almost without exception the form pouKy but one has p (No. 197), and in a copy of another (No. 206) the last three letters oi pour have been deleted. Another (No. 240) claims to have been " acheue par Anthoine Verad" but this expression may pass, since the illumination may well have been done in Verard's establishment. The testimony of the colophons is evidently quite, inconclusive.
The view of the present writer has at least one merit, that no one can entirely disagree with it. It is that Verard employed various printers to print certain of his books, but that the bulk of them were produced in an establishment of his own. This view is chiefly deduced from the elaborate analysis by Mr. R. Pro6tor of the French incunabula in the British Museum and the Bodleian,^ and it has been fortified by an examination of other Verard books at Oxford, Cambridge, and Paris, and Amiens. Mr. Proftor has been able to show that the great majority of types used by Verard are peculiar to him ; the inference being, so far, either that he had his own printing establishment, or had various printers to work for him who were not allowed to use for ordinary work the types em- ployed on Verard's orders. This second alternative is, however, ruled out by the remarkable way in which the types are combined with one another, making it certain that they were all in use in the same establishment. Thus, in the Merlin of 1498 (No. 54) there are alternate se6tions in types 3* and 7, in the Ogier (No. 121) alternate leaves in types 2* and 11*=, in the Roman de la Rose alter- nate leaves in types 2, 1 1* and 13, and in the latter the types have evidently got somewhat mixed. In other books, which it would be tedious to enumerate, somewhat less intimate combinations may be found through use of large types for title-pages, margins, head- ings, indexes, etc., so that no type is isolated. The types not peculiar to Verard may be identified as belonging to various printers,

whose names appear in conjundlion with them in at least one book. These arguments would no doubt be strengthened if analysis could be made of all "Verard" books which neither the British Museum nor the Bodleian possess. A considerable number have been inspefted by the present writer, who undertakes to say that the greater portion of them may be ranged under a few familiar types believed to be peculiar to Verard, while he has seldom ventured to assign an origin to the others.
VERARD AS Author.
This rubric may wear a doubtful aspeft, but there are certain compositions in verse which appear to justify 'it. To several vellum copies, intended for royal use, Verard has prefixed dedica- tions in verse, presumably of his own composition, unless, indeed, he got them done by a hack and suppressed his name. Thus, the Lancelot at the Bibliotheque Nationale (Vel. 614) has a long dedication, of which the following may serve as a sample :

A more ambitious composition is one addressed to Anne of Brittany, over three hundred lines long, and adorned with twelve miniatures (Bib. Nat. MS. Fr. 1686). The first page here follows :

Illustrations.
The illustrations in Verard's books, when closely examined, hardly bear out their reputation. Sets of blocks appear to have been expressly cut to adorn some thirty editions, and of these a few never appear again, while the others are used time after time. The extent of this repeated use may be judged from the table of cuts in the Appendix, in which forty-five blocks, selefted either from their frequent occurrence or as types of artistic style, have been traced systematically in their progress through Verard's pub- lications. Reprodudlions of most of them have also been given. It was hoped that a comparison of the successive states would give clues to the chronology of the undated books, but the Verards in the British Museum are not sufficiently numerous, and the present writer

has not had leisure to apply this method in the libraries of Paris. The greatest care would however be necessary in applying this test, as there appears to have been a practice of mending cracks in wood-blocks, especially in the outer edges. Besides being repeatedly used in book after book, it not uncommonly happens that the same cut is used again and again in^the same book. An extreme instance of this pradtice is the Merlin of 1498 (No. 54), of which the chief adornment is a cut (No. 3) repeated no less than twenty times. A pi6lure of a battle, it may be argued, is never out of place in a romance of chivalry. Some such far-fetched plea is nearly always necessary to justify the presence of a cut in any but the work it was designed for. For instance, in the "Josephus of 1492 (No. 21) the spoliation of a country is represented by 'the burial of a woman, the death of Samson by a picture of the Temple, and the Sacrifice of Isaac helps the reader to conceive the execution of a malefadlor, while a mention of the sea brings out a cut of Noah's Ark.
Verard's first two books, the Decameron and the Ditz moraux des philosophes contained only one cut apiece, which are not elsewhere seen in his publications, but from that time onwards we find cuts that became a permanent portion of our publisher's stock. Thus the Livre des proufitz champestres of i486 is adorned with a charm- ing set of small cuts, one of which (No. 21), representing the common theme, an Author at his desk, was very frequently em- ployed, and was handed down to Verard's successors. In the Cent Nouvelles nouvelles of the same year is a set of small cuts {e.g.. No. r) which are afterwards continually employed for books of the like frivolous tendency. The Vegece of 1488 furnishes a notable set of oblong cuts of a martial or courtly nature, of which Nos. 2-4, 4a, are specimens.
The Chevalier D^libere of 1488 is only known to exist in the copy at the Hofbibliothek at Vienna, but from descriptions and photographs kindly furnished by Dr. Goldlin von Tiefenau it is clear that this is the source of a set of cuts frequently occurring in Verard's books and originally designed for this poem. From the

same source we learn that the Legende doree of i49o[9i], of which also the only known copy is at Vienna, is copiously illustrated. This may be the source of many cuts of a religious nature found in Verard's books. The illustrations of his books of chivalry cannot be traced back, farther than the Orose of 1 49 1 and the Josephus of 1492 (Nos. 16, 21). Many of the cuts in the latter appear to have been designed for a Bible, but this edition remains to be discovered. In the same year appeared the Art de Bien Mourir, the cuts of which are frequently used in later books. The Bible des Poetes of i493[94] supplies a number of full-page cuts closely adapted to the text of Ovid's Metamorphoses, of which the book is a translation, and afterwards used for far different purposes. From the Lancelot of the same year come a few full-page cuts afterwards commonly used in books of chivalry. The Epistres SainSi Pol of i507[o8] is adorned by a number of full-page cuts {e.g.. No. xliii.) from the Cite de Dieu printed at Abbeville in 1 486. These however are found in several undated books that have no privilege in the colophon, and were probably therefore issued before January, 1 507[o8]. Also, just before this date we find in Verard's books a number of cuts of a most peculiar heavy style, of which No. 45 is an example. The Pastilles of 151 1-12 contain a large number of new cuts, but they mark the end of Verard's career. By a fortunate chance all the sets of cuts above-mentioned make their first appearance {i.e., most nearly fit the text they adorn) in dated books. One undated book adds considerably to Verard's stock, namely, the T^erence (No. 152), which must have been issued between 1500 and 1503. The cuts in this are produced by numerous small blocks of persons and scenes, capable of infinite arrangements, with or without alteration in the legends. Of this set Nos. xxxix.-xl., respedlively, are repro- duced as specimens. Cut No. 40 is one of a set very commonly used, first appearing in the Regnards trauersans (No. 149), which dates it between 1500 and 1503.
There are a certain number of sets of illustrations that only appear in one or more editions of a single book, either because their themes did not adapt them for frequent use, or because they

were never in Verard's possession. This latter explanation may be adopted in cases where they are accompanied by types not else- where used by Verard. Thus in the Doolin (No. 65) is a set illustrating martial scenes ; in the Grandes Pastilles (No. 99), and in the P^krinage de I'homme (No. loi) a religious set. In the Pelerin de vie humaine is a most remarkable set, of rude draughts- manship, of which No. xxxiv. is a specimen. The Ortus Sanitatis (No. 140) is copiously illustrated with small grotesque cuts illus- trating natural objefts ; another quasi-scientific work, the Pro- prietaire (No. 146), has a set in the same heavy style and by the same hand, apparently, as No. 45. In this style also is a set, not elsewhere used, in the VaUre le Grant (No. 153). The Coeur de philosophie (No. 1 59), also of a scientific nature, has a set of diagrams illustrating astrology and chiromancy, for which no further use appears to be found. The full-page cuts in the Figures du vieil Testament et du nouvel (No. 163), imitated from the Biblia Pauperuntf are not to be found in any other book of Verard's.
Sources — As to the sources whence Verard's illustrations were obtained, very little is known. Two books at least ^ were drawn upon, the Cite de Dieu, printed by Jean Dupre at Abbeville in i486, and the Mer des Hystoires, printed by Guillaume Lerouge for Vincent Commin in 1488. The fa6t that Verard used the cuts from the latter work has been used by M. Monceaux^ as a chief support of his argument that Lerouge and his brother printed all Verard's books, at least those not avowedly the work of another printer. This argument from the occurrence of cuts is most unsafe, for M. Monceaux's conclusions are impossible to reconcile with the fafts we shall adduce. Thus cuts from the Mer des Hystoires- occur in an edition of the Arbre des Batailles and in Les Vigilles de la mort du feu roy Charles septiesme, both printed at Paris in 1493, and both avowedly by Jean Dupre. This same printer published a Vie des Peres in i486, which has on its

title a cut also to be found on the last leaf of the Postilks pub- lished at Troyes in 1492. Yet the appearance of this cut in a book of Verard's is proof enough that Lerouge printed it, if we are to believe M. Monceaux. A fine capital I, exhibiting Christ with upraised finger, appearing in vol. 2 of the Mer des Hystoires, is to be found in an edition of the same work printed at Lyons in 1491, which Lerouge, presumably, had nothing to do with. This exchange of cuts among printers and publishers is further illus- trated by a book printed for Jean Petit, the Genealogie . . . Godefroy de Bouillon (Paris, 1504, 4°), which contains a varied assortment of Verard's cuts, e.g., Nos. 38, 4 (and others from the Ccesar of i488[?]), 44.
The sources whence Verard took cuts for imitation were doubt- less many — a few can be perceived. Thus the title-page of the DestruSiion de Troie la Grant is imitated from that of the Lyons edition printed by Husz in 1485; the Kalendar of Shyppars (No. 68) contains numerous cuts imitated from the German, and one at least imitated from a cut used by the Lerouges at Troyes ; the Exposictons des epitres et evangiles (No. 100) contains a set imitated from Knoblouch's editions of the Passionis Cliristi unum ex quatuor Euangeliis textum printed at Strasburg about 1508.
Before leaving the subjedt of the illustrations one or two of Verard's contrivances may be mentioned. When blocks became worn out, or when perhaps it was merely desired to produce a cheap book, the blocks were shortened. This may be seen in Verard's latest edition of the Bible des Poetes (No. 155), published about 1507, in which all the folio cuts have been thus treated, and in the 1509 edition of Senecque des motz dorez (No. 188), where the well-known frontispiece-cut (No. 10) appears in abbreviated shape.
In using cuts for books that they were not meant to illustrate, it became necessary for Verard to remove the existing legend. Thus the blocks of the Chevalier Delibere appearing in later books bear evident traces of mutilation, and sometimes from the appear- ance of the border (as in No. 29) it is evident that a piece has

been inserted. Another praftice of V^rard's was to insert small blocks in borders that did not belong to them {^see Nos. 91, 179, 180, 147). This last is a remarkable instance, as each border encloses two cuts, a small one from the Horce, together with one of two representations of S. Jerome, producing a most bizarre efFeft {see cut No. xxxviii.).
Fate after V^rard's Death To trace the subsequent history of
the cuts used in Verard's books is a matter of no great interest, perhaps, but a few fad:s are here recorded. Cut No. 36 is found in a late but undated Mirouer de la redempcion humaine} A Lancelot'^ published by Jean Petit in i53o[.''] contains cut No. 26. The quasi- device of Verard (plate No. Ixxviii.) is on the title-page of La translacion de la bulk de la croysade, etc., 1516.^ , Two cuts from Verard's Terence are in Le Livre du faulcon des dames [1525].* The cuts of the Art de bien Mourir afterwards went over to Eng- land, and some of these are found as late as 1568 in The Booke of Nurture (T. East : London, 4°), having thus a career of at least seventy-five years.
Initials,
The initials used by Verard, especially on the title-pages of his book, have always been much remarked, so much so that the appearance of a remarkable L on a title-page of a Paris book has often been enough to secure its ascription to Verard, if no other printer's or publisher's name were there. A series comprising nearly all of Verard's L's is given in the Appendix, and the appearance of each has been noted in the bibliographical descrip- tions. Their appearance does not as a rule afford any clue to the chronology of the undated books, as their use extended over too long a period. L No. 4, for instance, first appears in the title-page of the Bible des Poetes of 1493 [4], and must have been worn out in April, 1509, when we find it, recut, in the Eneide.

L No. 8 first appears in a dated book in December, 1505, and is used in five other dated books up to March, i5o6[o7], so that the undated books in which it occurs may fairly be dated about 1 506. They could not, as a matter of faft, be dated earlier than 1 503, on account of the address in their colophons, nor after January, 1 508, owing to the absence of a privilege. L No. 10 appears only in one undated book, the Nefde S ante of Jznuzry, i^oy[oS], which can be dated by other means.
L No. I, doubtless belonging to Pierre Levet, the printer of the Sydrac/t, does not seem to occur elsewhere among Verard books. L No. 2, M. Claudin informs me, was used by Jehannot and Le Dru. L No. 3 is little used, and No. 5 only once, in the Boece.
L No. 6 is one of two imitations from an original L which may be found in the Livre du Faulcon ^ (Paris, s.l.n.d.). One copy was used by Le Caron in 1489 and afterwards transferred to Verard ; another was used by Guillaume Lerouge at Troyes (in his Danse Macabre of 1491).^
L No. 7, again, is an imitation of one to be found: (i) on the title-page of Le grant Testament Villon <l le petit, Paris, n.d. ; ^ (2) on the title-page of Le debat des deux bons Seruiteurs (Paris, s.l.s.d.) \* and (3) on the title-page of Loreloge de deuocion ^ printed by Jehannot. The first of these books was, however, M. Claudin believes, printed by Denis Meslier. Of the two imitations of this original, one was used by Guillaume Mignard in his Complainte d'ung Francoys printed at Geneva in 1495,^ the second by Verard.
The identification of these L's is a matter of considerable diffi- culty, because Verard made imitations of L's that pleased him, and

his occasional printers made imitations, presumably with his per- mission, of L's that he already possessed {see No. 45). Sometimes, too, a familiar initial becomes unrecognizable through a fresh ornament being added to the block. Thus the L on the title-page of the Martilloge des faulces langues (No. 118) is really that of the Commentaires Jules Char (No. 259) with a slight addition. The small breaks in the letter render identification Certain., iit^^a uuaA
Verard uses numerous sets of initials in the body of the text of his publications. The appearance of the earliest, a small black set, is a help to chronology. In the Art de Bien MQurir of 1492 spaces are mostly left for the rubrisher to fill in the small initials, yet in certain cases F and C are filled in with printed letters. In the Lancelot of July, 1 494, for the first time a set similar to these two is used throughout, whereas in the Boccaccio of the end of the same year they are omitted, as also, in part, in the Ordinaire des Chretiens of 1495. In the following year they are regularly used. So that 1494, 1495, or 1496 may be assigned as the date of a book in which the initials are omitted, are partly used» on used throughout.
The other sets of initials used by Verard only appear when he has left the Pont Notre Dame. They are (i) a set adorned with flowers, alluded to in the present work as the " floral " ; (2) a set composed of flourishes, here called the " calligraphic " ; (3) a set exhibiting " grotesque " heads, and here so called ; (4) a set with rounded projedlions, here called " bossed."

Verard followed the custom of his time in using a device, which is often the only indication of his connexion with a book. The earlier form is only found in three books, the Cent Nouuelles nouuelles of i486 (No. 4), the Sydrach of 1487 (No. 5), the Vegece of 1488 (No. 6), the first two printed by Levet, the last by Marchand. Subsequently it was appropriated by another of Verard's printers, Pierre Le Caron, who cut out Verard's monogram from

the heart in the centre and his name from the lower edge, and printed his own name in the space thus left blank by the block. Two books are known that bear this modified device, namely, a copy of Les lunettes des Princes in the library of Baron James de Rothschild (a facsimile is given in M. Picot's Catalogue) and a book in the public library of Rouen, of which a photograph has been taken by Mademoiselle Pellechet. A new device, of much better workmanship than the earlier one, first appears in the Politiques daristote of 1489 (No. 9), and continued in use with Verard's successors. The efFe6ts of use appear to show that it was cut on metal. On the title-page of a few books, a monogram com- posed of the letters A V will be found ; and sometimes in vellum copies a painted device is used, exhibiting a heart with mono- gram flanked by birds.
Trade Practices.
An attentive study of Verard's publications does not tend to clear his rather doubtful reputation. He had a habit of suppress- ing the names of the printers who worked for him, which becomes rather discreditable when effected by scratching out the colophon, as in the DestruSiion de Troie (No. 52), or obscuring it by an illu- minated device, as in the Fais Alain Chartier (No. 109). How- ever, sometimes the colophon is erased in the vellum copies even when the printer's name is not there, as in the Doolin (No. 65) and the Chateau de Virginite (No. 73).^ The whole question of this deletion of colophons is rather obscure. In the case last mentioned there seems to have been a desire to get rid of the date, so as to sell the copy under the guise of a novelty. In certain cases, ^.^.,the Ordinaire des Crestiens of 1494 and the Boece of 1494 (No. 37), the date only has been erased. The Coutumier de Touraine (No. 86) exhibits an erasure of date in two copies at Paris and Tours * respectively. In the former the word sept has

been erased and written in again. The reason of this is not apparent.
There is one case, that of the Vienna copy on vellum of the Jouvencel of 1497 {see No. 266), where the date has been made four years later to indicate the termination of the illuminator's task.
An incorredt date may sometimes be found in the colophons for a quite contrary reason ; in cases where an edition has been exactly reprinted the old date has been retained, e.g.^ the Lancelot (No. 1 66), reprinted after Verard's move to his establishment, " deuant la rue neufue Nostre Dame," has the date of the earlier edition, 1 494, in the colophon of the first volume. Similarly the Hora of January 14th, 1500, were reprinted at the new address, the original date remaining unaltered {see No. 253).
It will sometimes be found that a book of quite early date has a portion in a type chiefly used in the fifteenth century,' This was due, no doubt, to a loss of certain sheets, which might very well have been caused by Verard's frequent removes.
The treatment accorded by Verard to his authors was un- scrupulous enough, if we may judge from one case of which par- ticulars have been handed down to us. One Jean Bouchet wrote for him a book called Les Regnards trauersans, which Verard on the title-page ascribes to Sebastian Brandt, the author of the Stultifera Navisy while leaving the real author's name hidden in an acrostic at the end. The wretched author, by his own account, was not so much aggrieved at all this as by the liberties taken with his MS., which drove him to prosecute his publisher. Books of Hours.
Verard's Books of Hours form so considerable a part of his output that they require a paragraph to themselves.
The claim of Verard to have published the earliest Hora has been generally admitted-on the strength of his edition of August, i486, at the Bibliotheque Nationale. Just as the present lines were going to press, news was sent by M. Masson, of Amiens, of a yet earlier edition in his possession, dated February 6th, i485[86]. This (No. 195) appears to rank with the two following editions, being adorned with small cuts. Verard's next advance was in No. 198, with cuts of considerably greater dimensions, surrounded by borders. This edition is closely linked, by the resemblance of the borders, with No. 200, and both are printed with the types of Dupre. Intermediate in date between these two come the Petites Heures of February, i489[9o], with the same cuts as before, but new borders of a particularly pleasing nature. These passed before July loth, 1493, into the possession of Laurens Philippe, since they appear in a Hora of that date printed by him. The next type in the evolution of Verard's Horce is the Grandes Heures, of which undated editions have been ascribed to the year 1488, on account of the almanack for 1488-1508 that they contain. This evidence is not however conclusive, as the almanacks were commonly re- printed year after year without alteration. As therefore the blocks in the undated editions show greater signs of wear than those of the earliest dated edition (of August, 1 490), we must for the present

regard the latter as the earliest.' The Grandes Heures contain the cuts of the Petites Heuret, with one additional, representing David on horseback, and are adorned with fine wide borders of cuts inter- spersed with text. No two copies of these Heures that have come under our notice are exadtly alike, a circumstance probably due in part to the number of dioceses for which special issues were made up, and to the caprices of private persons.
;• The later of the Verard Hora^ beginning, as far as is known, with No. 219 (August loth, 1498), contain illustrations imitated from Pigouchet. The origin and sequence of these illustrations, as far as the sixteenth century issues in the British Museum are concerned, are exhibited in a diagram in the Appendix. It will be seen that there are five sets of them (marked for reference aj a*, b, c, and d). Set a is copied from the second set used by Pigouchet ; set a*, closely resembling a, from Pigouchet's third set, which is modelled on his second ; set b is copied from Pigouchet's fourth set, though cuts Nos. 3, 20, 24, are different ; set c comes from his fifth set ; set d is made up of odd cuts, of which No. 3 is found on the title of the Utrecht missal printed in 1497 ^X Higman and Hopyl, and No. 5 in the Pastilles printed by G. Lerouge at Troyes in 1491. The chronological order of Horce Nos. 8- 11 in the chart is fixed by cracks in cut No. 13, and to some extent in Nos. 8, ii, 20, 21. Hora Nos. 6 and 7 are partly identical, and evidently closely con- nected in date. The Sarum Horce (No. 2 in chart) has its date fixed by cut No. 3, which is more broken than in 1503, and by cut No. 8, which belongs to set a, and was therefore not used after 1 505. This Sarum edition has a large number of additional cuts — a set of twenty-two, representing the Saints, six representing the Passion, and a Pentecost and an Image of Pity in the crible style.
Verard's Successors.
This much-debated problem the present writer admits himself unable to clear up. The bare fafts may be easily presented. There

are six books issued by one or other of these successors. The three dated are a Froissart of 151 8 and a Sijour d'Honneur of 1 5 19, with the familiar device of Antoine Verard and his name in the colophon, and a Petrarque of 1514 with the name of Barthelemy Verard in the colophon and his device.^ Of the un- dated books, there is a Bible, also with the name and device of Barthelemy, a Vita Christi with the name of Barthelemy and the device of Antoine, and a Psalterium with the name of Antoine and the device of Barthelemy. Further, in 1527 a book appears,^ Les Mots dorh de Sen^que, printed in April, 1527 [1528], "for Germaine Guyart, widow of Antoine Verard."
To these testimonies must be added the lawsuits ' of May 20th, 1528, where Germaine Guyart appears with Marguerite, Jeanne, and Guillaume Verard, and in another court, *' Catherine Laillier, widow of the late Barthelemy Verard, who was also son and heir of Antoine Verard deceased," all requiring the division of certain vineyards formerly the property of Antoine Verard.
On these fafts, the theory of Baron Pichon and M. Vicaire is that there were two Antoines, the first the well-known publisher, the second a son of his who published from 1518 to 1527 ; and that Barthelemy was the son of the second Antoine. As, how- ever, his only dated book appears in 1514, this theory involves the somewhat extraordinary supposition that he took on the business at his grandfather's death, and was succeeded by his own father.
This difficulty may be avoided by supposing that the name of Antoine of the colophons after 15 14 is merely copied from the earlier ones as being a sort of trade mark (and it may be mentioned that all of them, except perhaps the Psalterium Daviticum, are re- prints of publications of the " original " Antoine). It will be seen that there is nothing in the legal documents inconsistent with this

view, which would make the " Antoine " mentioned in them to be one and the same person.
If this theory of the loose usage of Verard's name be accepted, it will be admitted that the use of the two devices may well have been looser still, so it is not worth while trying to account for the varying combinations of names and devices just now alluded to.

(2) Leguyllon de crainte diuine, etc. Each of the " peines d'enfer " is set forth in a cut. This set closely resembles one used by Guyot Marchand in his 1493 edition of the same book. Whether this is a case of imitation on one side or the other, or of copying from a common source, is undecided.
Besides this set the treatise contains on [dj a] a cut by the same artist as No. 31, and much resembling it.
(3) Aduenement de antechrist. A few miscellaneous cuts, e.g. on [kj a] No. 17 ; on the verso of that leaf a small cut also found, with many others from the same hand, in the Roman de la Rose of [1498 ?], and on [Ij b] No. 31. Besides these there is a set of cuts illustrating the " quinze signes," and one of the " Jugement dernier," all by an inferior hand, and a full-page cut of the Deity surrounded by the Blessed.
(4) The Art de bien Viure is copiously illustrated. The common frontis- piece-cut. No. 17, occurs twice j on [BBj a] one of the "peines d'enfer" is used again, without any particular reference to the text.
There are also several sets of cuts (i) in compartments, with labels, illus- trating scenes from the Bible history ; (2) an oblong set, representing the Adoration of the Virgin, the Lord's Prayer, the Apostles, etc. ; (3) a full- page set, illustrating the Sacraments.
Many of the cuts throughout the book are reproduced by M. Monceaux, though in many cases from an illuminated copy. Several of the large cuts are surrounded by borders from the Mer des Hystoires.
On [FFg] are found a small black initial L and C, the former in two varieties. Elsewhere in the book spaces are left for rubrished initials, the corresponding lower-case letter being sometimes printed in the middle. On

[a^ a"] is a large initial E in the same style as the large initials of the Afer des Hy St aires.

From the same source it would appear that the painted coat-of-arms below the title covers an impression of the device of Guyot Marchand. Sig. b of this copy belongs to the edition printed by Marchand in July of the same year. Sommer's Prolegomena to his facsimile reprint of The Kalender of Shepherds, London, 1892. cuts, e.g. on [m, A] No. 21, on [a, i] No. 17, on [Ij A] a cut showing angels supporting a shield on which are the emblems of the Passion. On [1, i] is a cut representing a shepherd finding his way by observation of the stars with an instrument. This appears at first sight identical with one used by Guyot Marchant at Paris and Nicolas Le Rouge at Troyes {Monceaux, i. 145), but on inspeftion proves to be a close imitation of it. There are also in the book a large number of other cuts, of German origin, and the calli- graphic initials reproduced by M. Monceaux (ii. 176) are used throughout. For further information as to this book, see Dr. H. O. Sommer's Prolego- mena to his facsimile reprint of it, London, 1892. The Chatsworth copy, from which this reprint was made, is the only perfeft one known.
Type : This type is only known to exist elsewhere in a single leaf of an unknown edition of Alexander Barclay's Castle of Labour, discovered by Mr. Gordon Duff among the Bagford collecftions (Harl. 5919, No. 215).

Illustrations : This copy is one executed by V^rard for Charles VIII. An illumination on the frontispiece represents him kneeling before a king and queen, with courtiers in the background. This page has a fine border of fleur-de-lys in blue and gold. The next leaf bears on its refto cut No. 1 7, illuminated, and having a similar border but of inferior execution. Doubt- less an inferior artist was employed when an illumination was used merely to colour and not obliterate a woodcut. Throughout the book are illumina- tions, no doubt covering cuts.

The numerous slight imperfeftions in the block leave no room for doubt as to the identity of these two blocks. Type : Marchand's type No. 2 is used throughout, producing a very fine efFeft.
