Thus, as the class of 1953 meets and passes that "certain day in May," you come to realize that the last four years have left you with a purpose in life. The long-awaited time when you are on your own and can begin to make your mark has finally arrived. You have a job to do.
When we graduated from high school, we were sure we were grown up, but now that freshman customs, proms, Visual Education projects, and Swing Out are past, you at least, know better. College has given you the measure of steadiness and understanding that you lacked. It has given you a job to do.
After graduation, you no longer receive . . . you will do your best to give. You will give learning and understanding, and in a way, life itself, to the children you teach. It is no easy task, but it can be a happy one. We hope we can do as well as you.
We who follow you dedicate this book to the wonderful class of 1 953. We're happy to follow in your footsteps.
DEDICATION
Homework on a popular bench in front of our Fisher Aud

Autumn oak leaves cover the ground in front of Waller Gym as another gym class is over

OUR CAMPUS
Though we may have to share the oak trees with the squirrels, the rest of it's all ours. The benches that never stay near the lights . . . the Student Union with its coffee and donuts . . . band practice in the circle . . . and even the fountain on east campus that doesn't work . . . they're all ours!

STUDENT
Almost anything going on around a campus could be called "student life," but somehow those words can have very special meanings. They mean the ordinary, everyday hap- penings we couldn't get along without . . . coffee at the Union, a fruitful trip to your mailbox . . . just about anything.
After dinner, Reception Lounge and the piano seem to be the "irresistable force"
LIFE
Five miscellaneous students and one new Whitmyre Hall
Hopalong Cassidy, Fu Manchu, and assorted companions at the Senior Masquerade
The "breakfast bunch" at the Union

Indiana is a college with a single purpose, an institution for the prepara- tion of young men and women for teaching in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In a democracy which depends so much upon an enlight- ened and educated citizenry the role of a teacher becomes one of the most important tasks of our society.
Recognizing its importance in our democratic society, the College has tried to become both a place where people learn together and a place of ideas. Learning together effectively requires not only a compe- tent stafF of instructors but a student body personally equipped to be- come themselves able teachers. Both in preparation and experience, the faculty at Indiana meets fully the rigid requirements of a profes- sional institution equipped to prepare those who will guide the lives of our future generations. Not only have staff members acquired the neces- sary formal education, as evidenced by the degrees which they hold, but all have had many years of experience, some of which has been in the public schools of the nation. A potentially able student body is assured through the process of selective admission in addition to the process of selective retention at the close of the second year. In this way only those students are permitted to continue who show evidence of possessing the characteristics necessary to become the teachers of our children.
Of even more importance is the attempt of the College to become a place of ideas, a place where concepts are acquired not only from vicarious but from direct experiences as well. To stimulate the acquisition of ideas, and the consequent ideals which are based on such ideas, has become the primary purpose of this institution.
The graduates of the 1953 class represent a carefully select student body, whose members have had an opportunity to live together with a competent professional staff for four years in order that they might ac- quire the ideas and ideals of the democratic society which it is their unique function to help perpetuate. The future will reveal, we are sure, the successful manner in which the members of this class have met this challenge.

The Art Club cements the department together and is greatly responsible for the great spirit within the department. We opened the year with a big party to welcome the freshmen, and we were represented at the Campus Carnival and the Homecoming parade. Some of our other ac- tivities included the Christmas Party, the annual Beaux Arts Ball, and the clothesline exhibit at Swing Out. Professional interest is being built by interspersing the social events with professional departmental meet- ings. The officers of the club are: Clyde McGeary, President; Fred Boss, Vice-President; Jane Curry, Secretary; Paul Erickson, Treasurer.

This year the students heard a lecture by the noted author and business edu- cator. Dr. Dorothy Finkelhor. In the spring the business students in cooperation with local merchants spon- sored a Merchandise Fair, which was held on the campus. Officers of the J. C. C. are Charles B. Flint, President; Sally Scheeran, Vice-President; Marjorie Strong, Corresponding Secretary; June Summerville, Recording Secretary; Harry Danielson, Treasurer; and the Advisers are Elsie G. The Music Department prepares and develops stu- dents for public school music teachers and extra- professional music education. May 3-9 was a busy week for all music majors. It was National Music Week and time for the Music Educators' Club to perform. We did exactly that by having two Convocation programs, senior recitals, and all other special events on those few days. Our activities were not all limited to Music Week. Throughout the year we enjoyed many teas, outings, and a dinner. Officers of the club are Daryl Cornelius, President; Jim Lauffer, Vice-President; Joan Frey, Secretary; William Appel, Treasurer; Clel T. Silvey, Adviser.

The Home Economics Club welcomed the new freshmen to the department with a Big-Little Sister party. A few weeks later the freshmen were further initiated by an all-white candlelight ceremony which formally made them members of the depart- mental club. Other activities included a booth at the Campus Carnival, and a float at Homecoming. The freshmen were again feted at the Sophomore-Freshman Party in November. The annual Christmas Party, and Merry-Go held on Valentine's Day for the juniors and seniors were high lights of the social calendar. The year's activities were completed by a depart- mental tea for high school students interested in Home Economics OS a career. The Home Economics Club is affiliated with the American Home Economics Association.
Officers are: Helen Young, President; Mary Alice Stitt, Vice- President; Margaret Ann Cooper, Recording Secretary; Mary Agnes Price, Treasurer; and Helen Loftis, Adviser. An Elementary Department student gains knowledge in the materials and methods needed to teach children of elementary school age. He reaches the peak of his college career during his student teaching days where he applies the methods he has learned. The Elementary Club is afTiliated with the Association for Childhood Education International. Composed of representatives from each class and the club officers, the ACE council helps outline club activities. This year the club held a "Get Acquainted" Party for freshmen and a Christmas party, compiled student directories and sponsored professional meetings. The ofFicers are Peggy Kracht, President; Shirley Ort, Vice-President; Joan Ditmar, Secretary; and Lois Ward, Treasurer.
Anyone in these six departments, English and Speech, Foreign Languages, Geog- raphy, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, is automatically a member of our organization. Besides giving us a chance to associate socially, this club also fosters the exchange of ideas that will be of professional value to us. We feel these activities help us to unify our division. Bob Scalpello is President; Robert Jordan, Vice-President; Georgia Ann Funk, Secretary; Pat Sweitzer, Treasurer; and Dr. Joy Mahachek, Adviser.

Keith School student teachers . . . one of the lost steps in a long education
student teaching
The Keith School provides the college staff, and young persons entering the profession, on opportunity to study children, as well as to study about children. As a participation and observation center, the school furnishes prospective teachers a place where they may study new teaching-learn- ing concepts and test these new theories in practical situations. In the induction of the student into teaching, the Keith School endeavors to bridge the gap between theory and practice with a minimum of con- fusion, and constantly strives to encourage in the "new teacher" con- tinual professional growth through travel, study, writing, and broad contacts with community life.

SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Jules Filcik, President; Jo Wehler, Treasurer; Jeanne Frere, Secretary; and Cecil Tranquil, Vice-President.
We entered Indiana with little but the raw materials ready for moulding, eager for knowledge and under- standing. As we progressed, the pieces of the some- times confusing puzzle became clear. Along with our headaches and struggles, a constant companion, fun, accompanied us on our journey. Freshman customs, fraternal parties, homecoming, laughter show, and swing-out were just a few of the activities that added to our happiness at Indiana. Together, all this gives us courage to fulfill whatever work lies ahead.

At the beginning of the year the Sophomore Class thought up antics for Freshman Customs. Under the direction of our class officers we went all out to make Freshman Customs a memorable occasion. Although we needed a great deal of time to prepare for sophomore examinations, we still had time for fun. On November 22, right before Thanksgiving vacation, we held our class prom. Evening in Paris. To finish out our year as sophs we sponsored an informal outing at the college lodge in April.

Mixing fun with business at a Student Council meeting
student council
The Student Council seeks to create a frank understanding of mutual problems among the student body, the faculty, and the administra- tion. It also provides an opportunity for members of all departments to discuss student problems, and in so doing fosters a feeling of campus friendliness and responsibility. It acts as the advisory com- mittee for the Student Union and sponsors student elections. To raise money for the Campus Chest Fund, which it established, the Student Council backed a carnival this fall, the first of its kind to make an appearance on I.S.T.C. Campus. The council's current pur- pose in sponsoring "It's Laughter We're After" is to pay the band uniform debt.

Holding a place of prime importance in each girl's school life, the WCA is the governing body of all resident women. The council is composed of a president from each of John Sutton and Clark Halls and a representative from the women's cottages. During the year we sponsored a Halloween party, held open meetings, and installed new officers. We also conducted a survey of ideas for the redecoration of John Sutton Auditorium. Officers are Dolores Cas- sidy, President; Barbara Bouch, Vice-President; Marjorie Chapman, Secretary; and June Rowbottom, Treasurer.
non-resident
women's
league
Even though we don't live on campus, our membership in the Non- Resident Women's League enables us to associate with our friends and to take part in more campus activities. It is our custom to com- plete one special project each year. Our social get-togethers in- cluded outings at the lodge end several other parties. Officers are Sarah Jane Williams, President; Janet Simpson, Vice-president; Leora Roger, Secretary-Treasurer; and Anna Gorman, Adviser.
judicial board
As members of the governing board for resident women, we act upon cases of misdemeanor and give counsel to the infractors. Each year we publish a hand-book for freshman women to make their dormitory life happier. We are under the capable leadership of Miss Faust.
Dean Faust, Dean Whitmyre, and five members of the student body carry out a well-rounded social program on campus. Our treasury supplies newspapers and magazines for the lounges, movies — with the innovation this year of foreign films — and orchestras for dances. The Social Life Committee joined with the WCA to provide Sunday teas and equipment for the men's and women's lounges. The resident and non-resident women's organizations are allotted their own budgets. Social Life also financed the Freshman Orientation parties.

A part of the Jacob's Pillow dance group — a highlight of the year.
Each year Cultural Life schedules those entertainment events calcu- lated to be of most value to the student body. The Committee is made up of one member from each department. This year the group chose the Wagner Opera Company, which presented "Carmen," Jacob's Pillow Dance Group, the Robert Shaw Chorale, and a lecturer. A. E. Drumheller is adviser to the group.
th
e cue
The Cue, the official handbook of the college which is financed by the Cooperative Association, is distributed before the opening of the fall session each year as a guide to students. In it are published all the regulations governing students and student activities, and de- scriptions of all college organizations, both curricular and extra- curricular. The booklet is completed by a calendar of events for the coming year. Members of the staff are Mary Ann Calterone, Editor; Karlin Bennett, Art Editor; Barbara Book, Nancy Evans, Janet Cook, Marilyn Hill, Carol Henry, Ruth Runaley, Elenore Zimolzak, Harriet Calhoun, Nancy Tebay, and Jane Miller. Advisers are Dr. Galen S. Besco and Dr. Orval Kipp.

This year the Indiana PENN continued to present weekly, uncensored news and features to our readers. Not only did we of the staff work for expression, but we urged the student body to express its views through letters and editorials which we printed. We are proud of the Ali-American and Inter-Collegiate Awards that we have re- ceived, and we have done our best to maintain the traditional free- dom of press here in Indiana.
Janet Miller
First Semester Editor
Richard Flickinger Second Semester Editor
The PENN is justifiably proud of its policy of "no censorship," which is rare in most schools like I.S.T.C. When the responsibility rests upon the students alone, it has been proven time after time that that responsibility breeds caution, courage, and integrity within the newspaper.

A yearbook is not just another volume to be leafed through, and then tucked into a bookshelf to gather dust. For years to come it is brought out and the pictures are laughed at and sighed over. Sentimental? Maybe, but a yearbook has in it a lot of things we've put our hearts into.
The 1953 OAK has tried to keep away from lofty aims and mottoes, and noble sentiments because we realize that it's the little things we most enjoy remembering. We hope you enjoy it for a long time.

Our committee, composed both of faculty and students, works to arrange the religious activities of the college. Our special projects each year are the monthly vespers and the Spiritual Enrichment Week Program. These events have become important features on our campus. We also help the various church organizations to co- ordinate their programs. Chairmen of the committee are John R. Sahli and Margaret Thompson.

Maintenance and growth in good fellowship and religious aware- ness on campus is the ideal of the YMCA. This year was packed with successful programs, memorable among them the annual spring outing at the lodge. Perhaps the highlight of the year's activities was the concession booth sponsored jointly with the YWCA at the first Campus Chest Carnival. Officers are Sherman Good, President; John Zammikiel, Vice-President; Dan Sagramoso, Secretary-Treas- urer; and I. L. Stright, Adviser.

As one of the most highly organized groups on campus, we strive to present various activities to interest all our members. A Frosh Sing, held in conjunction with the YMCA, and the annual Big-N-Little Sister Party initiated our year's activities. We also had morning watch services, teas for resident women, Bible study, program meet- ings, and work sessions on the Chevy Chase Project. Our officers are Phyllis Hoffman, President; Barbara Book, Secretary; Lois Kuhns, Treasurer. Advisers are Lois Anderson and Mrs. Mary Swarts.

Sponsored by the Episcopal Church of Indiana, we held monthly supper meetings which were a pleasant mixture of business and social planning. Fun, fellowship, and interesting discussions on re- ligious subjects made a full year for us. Several times we took over the worship service for Church School. Faculty adviser is Hubert E. Thornber.
A "Space Party" in September sent us zooming off on another full year of meetings, parties, and discussions at the United Presby- terian Church. An October hayride, a Thanksgiving breakfast, and a wonderful Christmas party at the Church were standouts among our monthly parties. Officers are Don Calhoun, President; Joyce Latshaw, Vice-President; Anna Jane Shaulis, Secretary; Blair Taylor, Treasurer.

L.S.A. enjoyed a full year of activities that started with a smorgasbord get- ocquainted dinner. Throughout the year we observed Sunday morning de- votions, monthly supper meetings, and held a spring outing at the lodge. Representatives were sent to Camp Lutherlyn and to two regional L.S.A. conferences. We were hosts to a group from Gettysburg College. Officers are Bill Pasternak, President; Shirley Hoenstine, Vice-President; Shirley Miller, Secretary; and Christie Sell, Treasurer. Advisers are Aagot Borge and Elsie G. Rineer.

At supper meetings of the Methodist Church, held every Sunday evening, church doctrines are discussed. In addition to these many meetings are the parties which are held once every month, the largest being the Christmas party, at which the club packs boxes for the needy children of Indiana and vicinity. The club frequently takes over the worship services for Church School. Leading the organization are Margaret Ann Cooper, President; Ellen Whitlatch, Vice-President; Elvira Towns, Secretary; Allan Couver, Treasurer; and Lola Beelar, Adviser.

A reception for students initiated the school year for us. Later the Hobo Party and spaghetti dinner created fun and fellowship. December found us enjoying a delicious soup dinner, after which we went caroling. Other highlights of the year were the Heart to Heart Party, the Easter Breakfast, and the Spring Party. Sunday evenings were spent listening to talks by out- side speakers and discussing matters that challenged us. This program, we feel, could not have been so successfully carried out without the assistance given us by Mr. Conrad C. Steinbrenner, the new director of Christian Edu- cation. Officers are Marlene Henry, President; Ruth Weaver, Vice-President; Lois Ward, Secretary; Malcolm Dunlap, Treasurer; and Willis H. Bell, Ad- viser.

Winter Sports Club, one of the largest organizations on campus, is open to all students. The club's purpose is to furnish ISTC students with an opportunity to enjoy the fun and relaxation of winter sports. Hikes and snow parties at the lodge with plenty of refreshments form a major part of the activities. Roller skating parties are also held during the year. Merrill lams advises the club.
Composed of students of all departments, IRC tries to give these interested persons a better understanding of international problems. To achieve this aim there are lectures, forums, and discussions. Dele- gates from the club attended the Middle Atlantic States Model National Assembly, the Middle States Regional Conference of the Carnegie Foundation for Universal Peace, and the Pennsylvania State International Relations Clubs Conference. Officers are Mi- chaelene Terpack, President; John Toman, Vice-President; Connie Erickson, Secretary; Marilyn Miller, Treasurer. Ralph Cordier, Colo- nel Hubert E. The classical music heard in the joint programs with both the Glee Club and College Choir was presented by the College Symphony Orchestra directed by Lawrence C. Stitt. The Symphony Orchestra is not only open to college students, but also to teachers and musicians from Indiana. In the spring several representatives participated in the All-State Intercollegiate Or- chestra at Mansfield, Pennsylvania.
The String Orchestra which meets once a week under the direction of Jerome Landsman took part in a combined Christmas Vesper program with the College Choir. The String Orchestra specializes in Christmas music. Many Vespers have been enriched by the playing of the String Orchestra.

Indiana's second year in an organized grid conference saw Coach Sam Smith's Big Indians end their season with a 4-4 record. Starting ofF the season with an easy 12-0 over Geneva, the gridders defeated Thiei, and met California's powerful team with an unblemished record. The California game was played on the Vulcans' Homecoming Day, and provided an ex- citing see-saw battle from start to finish, with the Californians winning the game in the last 45 seconds of play. After a 7-0 victory over Edinboro, the Braves hit a streak of bad luck, dropping decisions to Slippery Rock, Clarion and Lockhaven. The Lockhaven game was a close thriller, lost 19-20, and was followed by our final grid encounter, where the Big Indians came through with a 21-20 win over Saint Francis. The grid careers of eleven seniors were brought to a close in a season that, with a few breaks, could have been one of the most successful ones at ISTC since pre-war years.

Coach 'Peck' McKnight's Big Indians, hampered by inexperience and height, fought through a tough season. Losing 8 players out of last year's first eleven. Coach McKnight had to rebuild the team almost completely with freshmen.
At the beginning of the season the team looked like they might outlive all expectations, but as the semester ended, three of the first five were lost due to scholastic difficulties. From the '51-'52 season, the Braves lost Skip Hays, Jules Filcik, Tex George, Jack Conley, Steve Yewcic, J. C. Swauger, Bill Stoehr, and Chet Gurski.
The second semester the team was rebuilt again, and a jinx of losses fol- lowed through the rest of the season. The last game against highly touted Juniata was the best exhibition the team put on all year and they went ahead of the surprised visitors to win 85-83. A very successful season is expected next year in so far as all of this year's players will return with a year's teamwork and experience behind them.

wrestling
With only 4 men back from last year's squad, Coach Lou Shaffer's matmen rolled up their most successful season in the past sev- eral years, with an impressive record of 5 wins and 5 losses including the J.V. matches.
Last year's 147-lb. state champion, Chooch Policicchio came through with a 5-2-1 record to close out his college wrestling career. John Cugini, another Senior who has seen his last match had the identical record of 5-2-1 .... one win being against Kiski in a J.V. match.
A run down on the season shows the grap-

piers starting off by running up a pretty even tally of wins and losses.
The Lock Haven and Pitt matches, late in the season, were dropped 29-3 and 34-0 respectively. Speculation has often arisen as to why the Braves are so often scheduled out of their class .... as was the case with Pitt. Considering that those colleges with teams like ISTC are too far away to make scheduling practical, and that the several dozen grapplers under Coach Shaffer's direction need some sort of "slate of op- ponents," the Indian matmen have measured up amazingly well to their ambitious schedule.
Now everybody's doing it!

Chooch is on top agoin!
Manned with seven out of nine veterans, Coach Sam Smith's dia- mond-men turned the 1952 season into the most successful season of the past several years. Being undefeated in league competition, the Braves ended up in second place, with Lock Haven in first place. Although both teams were undefeated in league play, Lock Haven chalked up ten bonus points by defeating Bloomsburg twice, who had previously won over Westchester, while Indiana's opponents failed to win one league game. Since the championship is based on points accumulated. Lock Haven had the 10-point advantage. The biggest loss of the year was the one dropped to Duquesne, 15-4, while the biggest score chalked up was the 14-0 win over Juniata. Graduation in May deprived the 1953 team of both Pat Krupper and Gene Bloom.

swimming
Coach George Miller's Fin-men accomplished another "first" . . . their first victory for ISTC in an intercollegiate swimming match . . . when they downed Edinboro. The only other win of the season was registered against Kiski Prep, and the Kiski men also met the Indian swimmers once again, to come out with a tie.
A young, inexperienced team took to the pool this year, with only a few regulars, such as Chuck Lesko, Mike Marcenelle, Bill Dean, and Fred Boss, back from last season. At the close of this '52— '53 season, the Mer-men posted a 2 won, 1 tied, and 6 lost record. The coming season looks bright for the team, as we can expect the return of most of the members of a well- experienced team.
golf
Hit hard by the graduation of Bill Dickson, Sonny Serene, and Ed Matko, the Big Indian golfers, coached by Dr. Rhodes Stabley, Captain Victor Hawthorne, and Coach George Miller, finished the season with three wins and four losses. One of the highlights of the season was the invitation to the Juniata Intercollegiate Golf Open, which we saw the Juniata team cop. This year a team mascot has been added . . . Margo Morton. With this good luck piece, plus the fact that the whole team, consisting of co-cap- tains Jim Principe and Ed Branish, Jerry Goss, Wak Wiggins, Bob Hanch, Joe Calley, and Dick Napolitan, will be back this season should prove a good omen for the Brave golfers in 1953.

tennis
Trevor Hadley's racquet men weathered a tough season of seven losses and one v^in, hampered by inexperienced players, with only the first three positions occupied by veterans. This fall the courts were swept and rolled, and other improvements are planned for the Spring. This season should prove more successful since it will see the return of five experienced court- men, and with the ambitious schedule planned by the athletic department, we hope to see a greater interest in tennis at ISTC.
In the '52 season, the Indians lost to Duquesne, 0-9; to California, 2-7; and to Kiski, 1-4; then topped Clarion, 7-2; and dropping losses to Kiski, 2-3; to Grove City, 1-8; to California, 1-8; and to Allegheny, 0-9.

soccer
Lou Shaffer's booters saw the season close with six losses and two wins. The jinx of inexperience reared its head again, although many promis- ing players showed up for the sport. Their more veteran rivals proved too much for the Big Indians, but next year should see a more proven, tougher-to-beat team take the field. The Fall of 1952 also saw halfback John Cugini, Clyde Knarr, and Paul Coxey end their soccer careers at ISTC. The season's record included losses to Slippery Rock, 0-6 and 0-7; Grove City 0-4; to Lock Haven, 3-4; to Frostburg, 2-4; and again to Grove City, 2-5. Two wins were copped over Kiski, 4-2 and 3-1.

intramurals
A tense moment during one of the women's volleyball play-offs
Sigma Phi Epsilon copped the softball championship which closed the intramurals for the Spring of 1952, and in the opening sport last fall, the Sig Eps also went undefeated and untied tp take the six man touch football championship, beating the runner-up. Delta Gamma Tau. The men's tennis tournament was canceled because of bad weather, much to the disappointment of many of us. Basketball, the main intramural sport here at I.S.T.C., saw one of its most thrilling seasons with many topnotch teams participating. In the playoffs, Sigma Phi Epsilon drew a tie after taking their league, and Delta Sigma Nu edged out Phi Alpha Zeta 44-43 in a very close playoff game. At this writing, the final playoff is still in the future, but it will take a good team to cop that trophy.
In women's sports there was badminton, tennis, and bowling to keep the girls busy. The biggest attraction Was Volley ball, in which the Alpha Sigma Tau's defeated the freshman Alley Cats to take the Champion- ship title.

The title, "Highlights," covers a million and one events, from freshman orientation to graduation day itself. On these pages are scattered a few of the events that mean a lot to some or all of us. With registration and scheduling, we stood in endless lines, and filled out reams of papers and cards. Remember how crowded it is in the bookstore when you want to buy your books during the first week?
Soon Thursday nights were taken up with sorority and fraternity meetings. The third week in Septem- ber, we had our first Campus Carnival. There were fortune-telling booths, sketch artists, games of chance, and bushels of tomatoes to throw at assorted Sig Taus. Proceeds went to the Campus Chest. We were well on the way to a brim-full year!

The Queen and her court preside over the Home Ec "Hearts and Beaux" Ball
Homecoming week-end was a big event. Along with the parade, and Edinboro football game, we went through freshman customs again. Remember the prize- winning Alpha Sigma Tau float? Our first Cultural Life program, early in October, was the Wagner Opera Company's production of "Carmen." In between the bigger events were Vespers, Saturday movies, all- school dances, and assorted hayrides. The W.C.A. Hallowe'en Party presented quite a motley crew of coeds, as ghosts and flappers and dancing girls in- vaded John Sutton.
The Inter-Frat Dance was the first "big shindig" of the social season, and on November 13 and 14, Mr. Ensley's Masquers presented Moliere's "The Doctor In Spite of Himself." The following week, Ted Shawn's Jacob's Pillow dance group with some of the best performers in the country, thrilled us all at our second Cultural Life Program. One-act plays, and the Soph "Evening in Paris " prom rounded our November. After Thanksgiving vacation, Christmas parties blos- somed on all sides. Our formal Christmas dinner dance, and Boar's Head Carol left us in good spirits for the holidays. One of those special Sunday dinners coming up!
As we started into 1953, the basketball season got going in earnest .... and so did the last-minute- cramming before semester exams! When classes began again, late in January, we began another ac- tive semester. "It's Laughter We're After" came first, with the Phi Alph "Circus," and the frosh girls from Hall 4B with their "Last Chance Saloon" walking away with the cups. Sorority and fraternity Valentine parties followed in quick succession, and then Pan-Hellenic week was upon us. On February 17, Vaughn Monroe and his Camel Caravan arrived on campus to salute ISTC on a nation-wide hookup. The recording of the Camel Caravan Show and the concert given after- wards brought an all-time record audience to Fisher Auditorium.

The Robert Show Choral and orchestra groups take a well-earned bow.
As Spring and the inevitable "spring fever" ap- proached, we savv the Masquers present the comedy hit of the year, "The Women" v/ith a cast of forty women. During Spiritual Enrichment Week, we at- tended special vespers, discussion groups, and informal "bull sessions." The freshman "Oriental Ball" proved a big success for the busy frosh, as we entered the Spring bustle of pledge parties, fraternity rush par- ties, initiations. We had another excellent Cultural Life program when the Robert Shaw Chorale came to the campus. The following evening, we saw another form of music and dramatic art as the Modern Dance Club presented their annual recital.
The Business Department went all out for their big Merchandise Fair project for three days late in March,
swing out queen & court
and the pre-Easter season was rounded out in style with the big event of the sorority calendar .... the Panhellenic Dance. After vacation, events piled one on top of another. The art students sported startling original costumes at their "Bal Fantastique," and the seniors, after electing Jeanne Frere to be "May Queen," went ahead with plans for the Senior Prom on April 11. The Junior Prom, with an Egyptian theme, closely preceded Swing Out week-end. The crowning of the Queen, the Art Club Clothesline Exhibit, and "The New Moon," presented by Mr. D. and Mr. E. made this week-end one of the most ex- citing of the year. After that, the next two weeks were almost an anti-climax, ending with finals, Baccalaure- ate, and .... Graduation!

panhellenic council
The college Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the twelve fraternities on campus. The or- ganization has as its projects each year the support of an eleven-year-old Greek war orphan, the grant of scholarships to two non-fraternity women, and the award of the scholarship cup to the fraternity having the highest scholastic average. In November, Pan- hellenic welcomed on campus a new national fra- ternity, the Delta Zeta. The proceeds of the Pan- hellenic Dance will go towards a fund for an inter- fraternity house. The council also supervises the women's rush season.

September and October were quite busy months for us. We erected the "Squirt the Candle" booth for the Campus Carnival and used the theme "I'm For- ever Blowing Bubbles" for the Homecoming float. But by far the biggest event was going national on October 31. Our annual Christmas and Valentine parties proved to be successes. In February the year's rushees shared in the fun at the rush party. February also saw us in the limelight aiding in the production of "It s Laughter We're After." OFFICERS

Phi Mu's season really started last summer when two of the members attended the one hundredth anni- versary national convention in Macon, Georgia. The first social activity of the year was the fall outing at the lodge. We had a "Harum-Scarum" sideshow at the Campus Carnival, and the theme of our Home- coming float was "Shrimp Boats." We maintained a toy cart at the Indiana Hospital and helped the T.B. society. Several parties, a founder's day serv- ice, the Swing Out Tea, and the Senior Banquet rounded out the season's activities.

This year we set our imagination to work and came up with the idea for the "Ye Cinderella Bootery" booth at the Campus Carnival. Later we captured the spirit of the Gay Nineties for our homecoming float, "In My Merry Oldsmobile." Other events were the rush party, the senior banquet, and the banquet for our mothers at Swing Out. An informal group of the fraternity representatives on the council
interfraternity council
The Interfraternity Council consists of twelve mem- bers; two representatives from each fraternity on campus. There are no elected officers and no dues are collected. Walter M. Whitmyre, Dean of Men, is adviser. November was again the date for the annual Interfraternity Dance. This year a committee composed of one member from each fraternity re- vised the sections in the constitution on pledging. The interfraternity council has worked for close inter- fraternity relations during the past year, certain that improved relations will mean progress for I. S. T. C.

A house party in September opened the year for us, and what a busy year! A Homecoming celebration, a party before the inter-Frat dance in November, and an "open house" in December carried us through 1952. "Doings" in '53 included a senior party in March, and our formal initiation in April. The spring picnic in May was just about last, but far from least!

The OAK wishes to thank all of the 1953 advertisers for their cooperation and generosity. The good will between "college and community" here in Indiana is not always typical of college communities, and so we are all justifiably proud of it here. We, the students, though we have typical "students' budgets," appreciate your friendliness, and the quality of your service to us and to Indiana.
