Alma Mater

To our noble Alma Mater's name We, her children, sing a joyful lay, And to her a new allegiance pledge. That lives beyond a day.

A prayer for her who sheltered us, A hope no child her name will stain, A cheer thrice given with a hearty voice And now a sweet refrain.

Of loyalty are symbols twain. Her colors, crimson and the gray, "Dear Indiana Mother Fair, " The burden of our lay.

Sing, O Sing, Our Alma Mater's praise. Hail, O Hail; her colors ' gleaming hue! Give to her our homage and our love And to her name be true.

7/ 7 have learned nothing, I have experienced the passage of time. Both the instant and the eon have been my domain as I have passed the days, weeks, and years of my time here.

I

^S^

It has only been an instant in the face of history, and yes, it seems only yesterday that I came to this place which seemed so vast.

But now I call it home.

21

Often I felt that there was too little

time to learn even what was required of

me. There was so much to experience; so

many people to meet.

22

I

23

Those I did come in contact with taught me a lot. Not the least of my lessons was that learning is not a phenomenon of the classrooms; I learned outside as well as within.

Ihoufiji the pressures of time were iireat, I made it through. I learned to cojje.

In contrast to the pressure, I discovered an inner reserve of patience I had rwt realized I possessed. It lead to discipline.

27

28

/ had to work when I would have preferred to relax. But I still found time for friends, for fun for the small things that mean the most.

29

Yes, I have experienced time. It has

enrollment at lUP.

Time has helped me grow like a tree

with many branches of interest. It has

also given me roots, and made me strong

like an oak.

Dorms

Dorm living. Hardly an experience that's easy to put into words. Most of us have lived there and we've all come to know its weaknesses and its strengths. When we lived in Elsch, Lawrence, Whilnivre, or W'ahr, we could find plenty of reasoas to move out. EJccuses such as: "we're not really on our own," and "no drinking in the dorms," were just a few of the more popular ones. Now looking back on it wasn't it kind of fim to sneak that half- keg into your room past the hall coun- selor on duty? Well, at least it was fim until you started the party and found out that it was the first time in years that the counselor decided to spend a quiet eve- ning at home in his room. Then, of course, there's the meal plan which every dorm- dweller is required to get. .\ or B both of them guarantee an exquisite opportu- nity to experience the culinar\' delights of either Foster or Folger cafeteria. But of- ten, the cafe is the only place in town a person can go to eat six desserts at one sitting.

Seriously, living in a residence hall can be one of the most rewarding of all college experiences. You can alwavs find a friend to talk with, study with, laugh with and even cry with if necessary. .■Vnd besides, where else could you find one or two other people crazy enough to go out and throw snowballs at three in the morning whether it's snowing or not?

Off-Campus Dorms

Leininger, MacGregor, Algonquin, Hope, Wyoming, and Leroy. If you are looking for an off-campas dorm, Indiana has sev- eral from which to choose. Whether it is Oakland, Rooney, or one of the above, each offers the convenience of dorm living without University regulations. Each dorm, owned by an individual or corpo- ration, sets its own niles and employs its own counselors. They cater to people who cannot get University housing, or who want to live in a different location. Some, like Leininger. have dining facilities for the residents, while others are set up just like the on-campus dorms. Many have private rooms for those who prefer them. But no matter how they operate, off- campus dorms offer lUPs students con- venient, resonably-priced housing.

Apartments

N'inetv-eight, ninet\-nine, one hiuidrecl, or so it seems by the time you get to the top of the steps with the groceries. Our off- campus apartments somehow ahvays seem to lie at the top of a million steps or six miles from the campus. Even so, apart- ment life means that you're finally on vour own. There are no hall counselors to evaluate, hut you have to cook for vour- self and there's no longer anyone to clean the bathroom for you.

There is something satisf\ing about finding and moving into that first apart- ment — even though you have to move a mountain of jimk into a two-room abode you share with seven other people. Yet the joy of living vour own lifest\le, behol- den only to your landlord, makes it more than worth everv minor inconvenience.

50

Houses

First, find ten people (preferably of the same sex) who think they might l>e able to live together. Next, start looking at least six months in aclviuue; put ads in the papers, ask Clark Hall, bother your friends who already live off campus. Fi- nally — when you find something that has not lieen condemned and Ls not a winter resort for small, furr^- vermin sUp the landlord a few extra dollars just to be sure he'll hold it for you. But, never fear, once you have that off<ampiLS house \sith a lovely view of somebody's nist\ Buick right outside vour front door, the fim has just begim.

Undoubtedly, the l>est thing about living in an off-campus house in the CLOSE relationships you develop with your roomies. Whether its fighting for the bathroom on the night of a big date, typing to your roommate's Pink Floyd albimi, or studying anatomy together (no matter whose it is), moving out of the dorms to try conununal living is a great experience if one of you can cook!

Greeks

Swallowing goldfish, flagpole sitting, and marching single-file backwards. That's what your parents thought when you told them you were 'going Greek.' Since then, you've learned being Greek means more than three times to a match and singing ridiculous songs. Sure there's lots of fim involved like Sigma Chi Derby Days, Phi Psi 500, parties, and fornuds.

Greek life is a feeling not to l:>e described by a member of a sorority or fraternity, or felt by one who isn't. If you're fortunate enough to be a Greek, you know just how important alpha, beta, gamma, and the rest of those letters are. You wear them and cherish them forever.

Commuters

From battling blinding snowstorms to the agonv of a flat tire five minutes before an 8 o'clofk,IUP"s commuter experiences it all. On a campus where housing is some- times impossible to find, the next Iwst option is often a Chevy with reclining bucket seats.

The commuter's car is his best friend. It's a place to keep books, clothes, used coffee cups, and those favorite. Charlie Daniels Band tapes. It's also a great place to catch a little shut-eye between lectures pro- vided, that is, you don't lose the car in a pot hole on your way to the parking lot!

56

57

Couples

College provides lots of things, including the chance to fall in love. At II' P, just alxjut the time the squirrels get back from Florida or wherever they spend their winters one begins to see people walking arm in arm across the Oak Cirove. Some couples may be seen blow- ing a hurried kiss as they nm for class, while others catch a glimpse of that spe- cial someone during a lecture on physics.

But. whether it's the guy you were just lavaliered to or the girl you've jiLst mar- ried, manv people at I UP share something special with that special someone. It's that caring that makes it spring all year round.

59

Branch Campuses

Kittanning aiid Piinxsiitawney. Whenever we think of ll'P, we lix) often neglect our two branch campuses. But each, located 30 miles in opposite directions of the main campus, is important in its own

Not onlv do these campuses give Indiana the prestige of being the only state-owned imiversitv to have branches, but they also help to make us the largest state-owned educational institution.

The Big K and Fuaw were home for many of as during our first year or two at college. It was there that we met our best friend and met the prof who helped us survive the traimia of l)eing a freshman.

One can safeK say that a branch campus is the place for those of us who prefer a family atmosphere.

Homecoming

Tradition is the (Irisiiii; force l)ehind am Homecoining . . . traditional parade, tradi- tional football gaine, traditional parties.

But lUP's 1979 Homecoming shattered the time-honored mores of the celehra- tion.

Returning alumni viewed a parade honor- ing a male "queen," Tim Carroll, as the various factions cheered or jeered him along the route.

Although Tim Leventry was lUP's first male homecoming royalty in the earlv '70's, Carroll was the first male to ride the queen's float.

Patti Mehall and Cydney Shields werr Carroll's court. Later at the foothall game, lUP defeated rival Slippery Hock.

Derby Days

Perhaps nothing embodies the spirit of Creek Week at Il'P more than Sigma C:hi Derhy Days. This year. Alpha Sigma Tan won the first place trophy for gathering the most points. But all sororities joined together in friendly competition to raise money for Camp Orenda. The com- petition reached its peak at Keith Field during the games as different sororities participated in events like "Dress A Sig," and everyone's favorite, "Musical Ice Buckets."

Heidi Sampson, a Sigma Sigma Sigma sister, reigned as Derby Days Queen. This year's Golden Derby was rescued from the basement of John Sutton Hail.

Derby Days is just one example of the spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood each Creek exhibits during Creek \\'eek. Other events this vear included the Phi Psi 500 and the .■\11-Creek Pledge Mixer.

^^^SJ,

Nothing in the university experience is more fnistrating than arena registration. It's every person for himself. This is a do or die situation that we are put in. Per- haps it is more of a weeding process than classes are, for it pits the human brain against the computer.

Regi.stration is a computerized com- bination of a marathon and a scavenger himt. It's a game of sweat and squirm with the only sure things being Oak Grove 102 and .\dvanced Partying 306.

Memories of a monotone voice and glar- ing yellow closed section numliers are what nightmares are made of. .\fter we survive this traumatic experience and Uwk back upon it, we will he sure to laugh and we may even brag a little aliout the semester we spent nine hours in the arena, or the time we came out with a full course load in another major.

While the experience is still fresh in our minds, we can think of ourselves as gladiators or martvrs and about how appropriate the name "arena" really is.

Classes. When it conies right down to it, thats why we're all at lUP. .\nd yet, many of us avoid them whenever possible.

From the much-slandered 8 o'clock to the equally-avoided evening classes, thev get us up early, keep as up late, and knock its out. They add structure to our lives as students and form the basis for our daily grind.

Cla.sses are where we meet our chosen field head-on. Our perfonnance can deter- mine the course of our lives.

Sometimes we choose the easy classes, and at other times we opt for the challenge of a tough subject.

In the end, a hard-earned "\" can be one of the most satisfying of our college ex- periences.

It's 9 p.m. and you've got a final in the morning. Your roommate and the majority of the people living aroimd you are intent on celebrating their last exams.

There's no choice for you but to find some- where else to cram in those last few morsels of vital inforamtion. Somewhere quiet. Somewhere no one ever goes.

The choices are endless and the limita- tions are few. Only university regulations and your own ingenuity restrict your op- tions.

Libraries, reading rooms and study lounges are the obvious, but not the only choices. Often they close too early or resemble an unopened sardine can.

Hard-core studiers have been known to seek out and use every available nook and cranny every out of the way place on campus.

Everyone has his or her own favorite studying place an ideal spot to spend an all-nighter with or without eyes open.

What's worse than dirty socks, dining hall food, or a hangover? Only one thing tests. We all know we're here to get an education, hut there must be an easier way than to submit ourselves to the tor- ture of taking a test.

You know the feeling. That hopeless sink- ing in your stomach when you go to all four clas.ses on Monday (for a change) and each prof calmly announces a test to be given on that Friday; the Friday you were going to leave early to go home. But alas, tests c-oimt for grades, grades count for your Q.P.A. and, well, your Q.P.A. counts for just about everything. So, since you haven't read those three chapters either, you'd better cancel Thursday night at the bars or maybe jast limit it to VV'olfendale's and the Conev.

Doesn't it somehow seem worth it all when, as he passes back the tests, the prof says, "The highest grade in the class was a ninety-four. " You turn to that last page, and there it is in bright red ink 94!

Today I want to do things to be doing them, not to he doing something else,

I do not want to do things to sell myself.

I don't want to do nice

things for people so that

I will be "nice."

Under fall semesier's captain Lisa Barrera, and spring semester's captain Terri Morgan, the squad jumped and yelled for Indiana's foothall, basketball, and wrestling teaias at both the home and away games. TTie junior varisty sfjuad also cheered at all of the soccer games. The cheerleaders and mascot Kirby Cartwright were always dedicated to Iwosting school spirit and to perfecting their routines. They began their practice at camp in August and continued working, rain or shine, throughout the year to lead the crowds and bolster team morale at all of lUPs athletic events.

1980: The Class That Made The Difference

There is a part of me that wants to write, a part that wants to theorize, a part that wants to sculpt, a part that wants to teach ... To force myself into a single role, to decide to be just one thing in life, would kill off large parts of me. Rather, I recognize that I live now and only now, and I will do what I want to do this moment and not what I decided was best for my yesterday.

Hugh Prather

It's here. A lifetime of work has gone into this nionient. It's graduation and it can lie verv frightening. Where will it lead? What will you do'? There are dozens of (juestions to ask yourself. But alx)ve all, graduation is a joy. No matter what the past held, and no matter what the future brings, it's time to start life anew.
