PREFACE.
The first volume of the ' Register of the University of Oxford,' edited for the Oxford Historical Society, by Mr. Boase in 1884, gave the degrees from the earliest date down to the year 1571. The second volume, which now appears, is intended to continue the degrees from 157 1 to 1625, and to add the matriculations and other lists from 1571 to 1622.
The amount of matter which required to be included in this volume has rendered it necessary to divide the volume into three parts, of which the present book is the second.
Part I gives an account of the documents used in this work, of the degree-system during the period, of the matriculation statutes, and of other matters which required explanation. It contains also other lists of scholars and citizens than those found in the Matriculation Registers, which de- served publication. It is printed off, and will be issued immediately.
Part II, which is now issued, gives (I) some lists of students of the period just preceding the matriculation-system ; (II) the lists of members of the colleges and halls which were drawn up when the matriculation- system was first enforced ; (III) the entries of the Matriculation Registers from 1568 to 1622, and of the Subscription Books from 1581 to 1622; and (IV) tables of the matriculations and degree entries.
Part III gives the degrees for the period corresponding to Part II, i.e. from 157 1 to 1625. It contains also full indexes of members of the University, of places, and of matters to all three parts of the volume. It will no doubt appear almost indefensible that Part II should appear with- out an index ; but a careful consideration of the entries has convinced me that to give one index for the three parts was on the whole the better plan, the same names occurring passim throughout the three parts. This third part is ready for the press, and will speedily be published.
Description of the Work.
For an account of the sources and a criticism of many of the details of the present part, I have to refer the reader to the preface to Part I. But I may here give a brief indication of what is given in the following pages.
The first division of the work (pp. 1-46) gives a number of discon- nected lists of Students. For other similar lists supplementary to these see Part I, pp. 282-294 ; also Reg. I, pp. xxii to xxv.
The second division of the work (pp. 48-405) gives the matriculation entries. These are not given in the confused manner in which they are found in the Matriculation Register ; but have been reduced to a uniform order, on the lines stated in the preface to Part I.
rxviLr Av.Ji»
The" character of the records in this division may thus briefly be described.
In the first column the date of the entry in the IMatriculation Register and Subscription Book is given.
In the second column the College or Hall of the student is given.
In the third column the students' names are given. The spelling adopted is that of the Subscription Book where it is found, failing which the spelling of the Matriculation Register. See p. lOO.
After the name come the county in which the student was born, the quality or social standing of his father, and his age.
As regards the county, I have reduced the different forms in which the entry is made to one uniform system, entering only the actual form of the Matriculation Register where it presented any uncertainty or marked peculiarity. Thus I have followed the register in its varying use of ' Hampshire,' and ' Southampton,' the former being the more common form.
As regards the father's quality, I have introduced a similar, but less rigid uniformity. The ' quality ' falls into the following degrees : — •
(i) Son of a Prince, Duke, Marquis, or Archbishop. These are so few as to require no attention.
(2) Son of an Earl or Viscount ('comitis filius,' ' vice-comitis filius.')
(3) Son of a Baron, Bishop, or Baronet (' baronis filius,' ' episcopi filius/ ' baronetti ^ filius ').
(4) Son of a Knight, Dean, or Archdeacon. As regards the first of these, I have preserved the changes of the register between the forms ' eques,' ' miles/ and ' eques auratus ' (' eq. f.,' ' mil. f ,' ' eq. aur. f.').
(5) Son of an esquire (' armigeri filius,' ' arm. f.') or of a doctor (' doctoris filius/ ' doct. f.').
(6) Son of a gentleman (' generosi filius/ ' gen. f.').
(7) Son of a clergyman. For this grade I have adopted ' cler. f.' (' clerici filius ') as least likely to be misunderstood and as now in univer- sal modern use. During this period, however, the prevalent form is ' ministri verbi Dei filius ' with variants ' ministri Dei filius ' or ' ministri filius.' The few occasions on which ' clerici filius' is found are given in the notes, and I have noted also the forms, where they occur, of ' presbyteri filius,' etc. In the next volume (162 2-1 642), it will be necessary to point out the indication of the change in ecclesiastical sentiment which is given by the substitution of ' priest ' for ' minister ' in the statement of the father's quality (' sacerdotis filius ' becoming a common form).
(8) Son of a commoner (' plebei filius,' ' plebeus/ ' pleb. f.'). Lastly, the age of the student is given.
In the third division of the work, several tables are given. Their nature is explained on p. 406.
^ See the comparative occurrence of these grades and the others in table C, p. 414.

Symbols.
{ ) Letters and words inserted between angular brackets denote insertions in the text of the Register or of documents quoted, made by me on the evidence furnished by other parts of the documents I have employed. Where a mark of interro- gation is added (?), it denotes that the addition is not certain, but is offered as a probable conjecture.
[ ] Letters and words in square brackets are found in the Register, but are written by later hands than the rest of the writing in that place. This symbol is used with this meaning only in Part II.
^ Besides its technical use as of a Master of Arts, it is also used here and there in its courtesy sense. This use has been noted wherever it occurs.
^ This is the lowest grade in the social scale at matriculation. The equivalent of 'plcbeus' in Elizabethan English is 'yeoman.'
CONTRACTIONS AND SYMBOLS. XI
... This mark is used to indicate the absence from the Register or of a document of some part of an entry that is usually given or might have been expected to be given.
— This mark is sometimes used to indicate the absence from the Register of a Christian name.
f This mark in the column for the Colleges in Part II after p. 129, and in Part I after p. 402, indicates that the name it accompanies is foimd in the Subscription Book but not in the Matriculation Register.
* An asterisk attached to a name ^in the list of 'privileged persons' in Parti, pp. 392 foil.' indicates that the person so specilied did not sign his name in the Subscrip- tion Book but ' made his mark.*
Other symbols in the three parts are explained in the several places where they are employed.
Contractions for Colleges and Counties.
The contractions for the Counties will be readily understood. The contractions for the Colleges will also be readily understood, except perhaps the following : —
Aula Alba (White Hall, see infra).
Aul. Alb. or Alban. = AuIa Albanensis (S. Alban Hall, see infra).
Aul. Cen'. = Aula Cervina Hart Hall, see infra-.
Aul. Lat. = Aula Lateportensis Broadgates Hall, see infra''.
Aul. Nov. Hosp. = Aula Novi Hospitii ^Xew Inn Hall, see infra.
Broadg. H. = Broadgates Hall, a place for students erected into Pembroke College
in 1624. Case. See p. 45.
Christ's College (Collegium Christi" is sometimes found for Christ Church. Durh. C. = Durham College, see Maxwell Lyte's Oxford. Gloc. H. = Glocester Hall, a place for students erected into Worcester College in 17 14.
It had a close connection with S. John's College. Hart H. = Hart Hall, a place for students which stood on the plot of ground opposite
the (Old) Schools, occupied since 1874 by Hertford College. Ajq ambitious but
unwise Principal, Dr. Newton ^, sought to convert it into a College imder the title
Hertford College in 1740, and this involved its dissolution in 1805. Magd. C. = S. Mary Magdalen College, as distinguished from Magdalen Hall. Magd. H. = S. Mary Magdalen Hall, a place lor students which stood during this
period on the site of the most recent buildings at Magdalen College. In 1822 it
was removed to the site formerly occupied by Hart Hall, and was erected into
Hertford College (by a revival of an extinct name' in 1874. N. I. H. =New Inn Hall, a place for students which has just (June 1887) been dissolved
on the death of its Principal, Dr. Cornish, and its property transferred to Balliol
College. S. Alb. H. =S. Alban Hall, a place for students adjoining to the east end of Merton
College. The hall was dissolved and its property transferred to Merton College
in 1882. White H.= White Hall, the chief of the man}' halls which from time to time were
known by that appellation. It stood on the north side of Che)Tiej' s or Cheney)
Lane now Market Street . It was dissolved and its site and buildings merged in
Jesus College in 1571. In 1620 in a University document the College is styled
' Jesus College alias While Hall.' (See Part I, p. 291.)
' A graver charge is sometimes made against him, that, to secure the success of the petition for the erection of his hall into a College, he destroj^ed the documents which contained the early history of the hall, because they showed the dependence of Hart Hall on Exeter College. Mr. Boase wTites : — 'Bp. Conybeare thought (or insinuates) that Dr. Newton got the Hart Hall documents from Hole, the Rector of Exeter College, and never returned them ; but the story is not very certain.'

ADDITIONS AND CORRECTIONS TO VOL. I. By the Rev. C. W, Boase.
Some additional information was inserted in the index to Vol. i, and in the Addenda to it, p. 361. See also p. xxviii of the Preface to that volume. These notes will supply something further. A part of the corrections are due to Mr. Clark.
Many of the names occurring in Vol. i can now be assigned to their colleges by the help of Dr. Brodrick's Memorials of Merton, the index to Dr. Bloxam's Register of S. INIary Magdalen College, the lists at the beginning of Vol. 11, Part 11 of the Register of the University of Oxford, and similar books. If the lists of fellows and scholars could be printed as they may be collected from the College Registers, account books, etc., it would be a great boon. We are in hopes that Mr. Madan will print his collections for Brasenose, Mr. Shadwell for Oriel, Mr. Vere Bayne for Christ Church, JNIr. Clark for Lincoln, the Provost of Queen's, the Warden of New College, and the President of Corpus for their respective societies, and that their example may influence other colleges. Which- ever is printed first, the University Register or the Register of any special College, it will obviously be of material service to the later publications. Some help may be obtained from other sources, such as the State Papers ; for instance, the list of students at S. Alban H. given infra under Huycke. The declarations of assent to the several acts of King Henry VIII pre- served in the public records contain lists of fellows of the several colleges which are given very incompletely in Rymer's Foedera and the Calendar of State Papers, and ought to be printed in full, since College lists at that critical period are often very imperfect in consequence of the mutilation and destruction of Registers and account-books at that time.
A few names which it seemed more prudent to give separately in the lists in Vol. i may now be identified, such as Deyne and Deane. Some of the Registrars, as for example Ralph Barnack, often err in the names and especially in the Christian names \ INIuch later on a man is entered as born at ' Bath,' when it was really at ' Perth.'
It is to be noted that Wood gives the date of the licences ^ for the date of the M.A. degree, and that 'inc.' at the beginning of Vol. i means ' admitted to incept ', i. e. licensed.
As the earlier entries of Vol. n, Parts i,ii and in overlap part of the period given in Vol. i, the index to Vol. 11, Part iii should be compared with that to Vol. I for a considerable number of names common to both volumes.
^ Errors in the Christian names are very frequent throughout Vol. il. also, and occasionally very perplexing. See note to Vol. II, Part I, p. 36. The errors are perhaps not all due to the Registrar, but in part may arise from mistakes made by the person asking the grace or presenting the candidate.— A.C.
^ See Vol. II, Part i, p. 81.

DIVISION I.
LISTS OF STUDENTS, 1565-1583.
The Matriculation records of the University are preceded by- certain lists of students which are here given. Two very interesting hsts of the same date are prefixed, taken from the Register of the Vice-Chancellor's Court.
1. POOR SCHOLARS LICENSED TO BEG (1551-1572).
Many of the students in the Universities during the sixteenth and earlier centuries were in a condition of extreme poverty, which it is now difficult to realise or even to imagine. These 'poor scholars' were exempted from University and College dues, and lived by what they received from Colleges or individual graduates in payment of the different menial services which they rendered. During term they had also their share in University doles '^ distributed by the proctors, and in College doles. During vacation both wages and doles ceased, and they wandered about the country begging. We have to remember also that, even though they had a home to go to, the journey home might be a long one, and that they would require to beg their food and lodging on the way. In these journeys and begging-tours their chief reliance for food and lodging was placed in the numerous religious houses, whose hospitality was freely extended to them.
The suppression of the monasteries greatly increased begging and vagrancy, (which had already begun to be prevalent owing to
* The University doles would include the bequests to ' poor scholars ' which are said to have been a common item in wills. These bequests ceased for the most part at the Reformation. See Latimer, Sermons, p. 64 (^Edit. Parker Soc).

the change from the feudal to the mercantile system), for it cut ofif the shelter and food which the religious houses had freely- given, and turned adrift many of their inmates and most of their dependents.
After this time, therefore, we find repeated attempts to enforce the severe Tudor laws against beggars and vagrants, which had been already introduced. 22 Henry VIII, c. 12 (1530), had directed begging and vagrancy to be punished by the lash and the stocks, but leave was given to Justices of the Peace to issue under seal licences to beg to poor and impotent persons who must of necessity live by alms. The Chancellors and Vice-chancellors of Oxford and Cambridge were likewise empowered to issue under their University seal licences to beg to poor scholars. Poor scholars begging without such licence were to be whipped, put on the pillory, or have their ears cut off. From this Statute therefore we are to date the issue by the University of licences to beg. This Statute was supplemented in 1535 by 27 Henry VIII, c. 25, which directed Churchwardens and others to make provision for the relief of the poor.
These two Statutes practically represent the law of the land during the remainder of the Tudor period, i Edward VI, c. 3 (1547), introduced severer penalties of branding^ and slavery; but these severer penalties were repealed by 3 and 4 Edward VI, c. 16 (1550). 5 Eliz. c. 3 (1563), re-enacted 22 Henry VIII, c. 12. 14 Eliz. c. 12 (1572), repealed the old Statutes, but re-enacted most of their provisions, punishing vagrancy with imprisonment, whipping, branding, death. This Statute also re-enacted the right of the Universities to issue begging licences under their seal. ;^S Eliz. c. 7, § 6 (1593), repealed the severe penalties of the preceding Statute. 39 Eliz. c. 4 (1597), repealed the existing Statutes and substituted new ones. In this new Statute no mention of the right of the University to issue licences is made, and this right may therefore be supposed to have lapsed by that date.
The issue of licences to beg by the University must therefore extend from 1530 (22 Henry VIII) to 1597 (39 EHz.). The notices of them which I have found in GG. extend from 155 1 to 1572, and embrace in all fifteen licences.
They are all of the same character. They give the name of the students receiving them, who seem to have been sent out
' The letter V ( = Vagabond) was to be branded on the breast with a hot iron, and the vagrant to become slave for two years to whoever caught him.
I. LISTS OF STUDENTS,
' two and two ' ; also the time during which they might be used, apparently the Christmas vacation, as a rule ; also the persons who became security for the surrender of the licences when they expired.
The first of these notices is found on GG. 308 B. b., and has just been recovered after being long lost. A page of the register GG. had been pasted down when the book was bound. On my holding it up to the light, there seemed to be on it a row of names. It was carefully raised ; the row of names proved to be only a name written over and over again with other scrawls as by people trying a new pen, a thing which must be familiar to all who have seen the outside pages of old MSS. But there was also the following entry : —
' D.^ Petrus Tressem et Dionisius Ferald, pauperes scholares, sigillum habent VI die Maii 1551, reversuri die nativitatis Beatae Mariae proximo et sigillum reposituri.'
The next entries supply more details. Two of them are given as specimens.
(GG. 262 a.)
'XVI Decembris (1562), Galfridus Jones et Hugo Appowell, Universitatis praedictae scholares, eleemosinas Xti fidelium hcen- tiam petendi habent sub sigillo venerabilis viri Thomae Whit, legum doctoris ac almae Universitatis Oxon Commissarii, usque ad festum Purificationis Beatae Mariae proxime futurum dura- turam et non ultra : — quam quidem licentiam ad inducendam et domino commissario tradendam fidejusserunt Mr Hawle^ Collegii Omnium Animarum Fidelium defunctorum, pro dicto Galfrido et Mr Morgan de eodem Collegio pro dicto Appowell infra octo dies post festum praedictum sub poena quadraginta soli- dorum universitati praedictae solvendorum.'
* ' D.' is generally a contraction for ' Doctor.' Here it is probably a contraction for the more common ' Ds.', i. e. ' Dominus,' the title of a B.A. Tressem's degree will not be found in Reg. I., where the degrees for 1550 are however wanting. See Reg. I., p. 217.

2. LIST OP STUDENTS RESIDING IN THE TOWN, 1562.
Up to Elizabeth's reign, a very distinct trace of the old freedom of University life remained in the continuance of students who lived in houses in the town, unattached to any college or hall and having merely nominal connexions with the University. Their numbers received very large accessions at the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, because Romanist students, who were now excluded from the Colleges by the imposition (at the instance of the Privy Council) of subscription to the XXXIX Articles and the Oath of Allegiance, took up their quarters in the town and studied under tutors who were openly or secretly of their own persuasion. The Privy Council looked upon all Romanists as disaffected to the government, knowing that they regarded Elizabeth, the bastard daughter of Henry VIII, as a heretic usurper who excluded Mary Stewart, a lady of their own faith, from the throne. The ' Acta ' will contain repeated injunctions from the Privy Council^ directed to the rooting-out of such students from the University. Under this pressure the class of students resident in the University but not attached to any College or Hall disappeared after 1581 or so, not to be replaced till 1868.
GG. p. 89 b — 90 b supplies a notice of one of the earliest attempts to bring these students under more direct control. In 1562 (4 Eliz.) Justinian Holbecke {Reg. I. 270) inferior bedell of Civil Law, by a notice affixed to the doors of S. Mary's Church, summoned ' omnes scholasticos in domibus laicorum sive oppi- danorum habitantes ' to appear before Thomas Whytt, LL.D., the Vice-chancellor, in S. Mary's on 16 July, and to be then prepared to state the tutor under whose charge they had placed themselves. (In this list the Christian names in brackets are added by the editor, but on sufficient evidence.)

3. LISTS OP MEMBERS ON THE COLLEGE BOOKS
(1565-1583).
The first matriculation register (P.) is divided into 'heads' (capita) for each college and hall, arranged in this order : — Ch. Ch., Magd. C, New C, All So., Mert., Corp., Queen's, St. Jo., Trin., Bras., Oriel, Univ., Line, Exet, Ball., Jes., Broadgates H., Glocester H., Hart H., Magd. H., S. Alb. H., S. Mary H., New Inn H., S. Edm. H., Privilegiati, Scholares Mri Case, Scholars married, (and of much later date) Wadh. In all cases (except the cases of Line, where some pages have been torn out, of the ' privileged persons,' and of Wadh. where the list of members at the foundation was never inserted) the ' head ' for a college or hall begins with a list of members on the books at the date on which the 'head' began.
The Ch. Ch. list is dated 156I ; and hence it has been com- monly supposed that the other lists are of that date, and that the matriculation register begins in 1565. A comparison of these lists with the registers of degrees and with the College registers of admissions to fellowships, completely disproves this, and shows that in the majority of cases the matriculation registers do not begin till 1572, and that they are very imperfect till 1582.
The approximate dates of the several lists are —
156I-. All Souls, Christ Church, Corpus Christi, Magdalen College (first list), Merton, New College, Queen's, Trinity (first list).
I56|- (?). Brasenose, S. John's (first list),
1568 (?). Hart Hall (first list).
1572 or 1573. Balliol, Broadgates Hall, Exeter, Glocester Hall, Hart Hall (second list), Jesus, [Lincoln'], Magdalen College (second list), Magdalen Hall, New Inn Hall, Oriel, S. Alban Hall, S. Edmund Hall, S. Mary Hall, Trinity (second list), University College,
^ The first page or pages of the Lincoln entries are wanting. This loss is prior to the lime of A Wood, who (in his excerpts from the Matriculation book) begins the head for Lincoln College with the remark ' initium deest.' The loss is also prior to the pagination, so that there are no means of saying how many pages are gone.

I. The then Provost (Alan Scot) is indicated by his title. At a later time, some one reading over the list added the name of the provost of his time ' Mr. Busfell ' (Bar- tholomew Bousfield, el. 1575). This has led some one to add a date for the list * 29 Sept., 1577,' which is quite false. For a similar error, see the All So. list, supra p. 10.

42. Stapleton, Brian. | 44. Colye, Hewe,
The above lists are written in one hand, and are all of the date i56|- or 1565.
The Brasenose and S. John's (first list) lists are written in a different hand from the earlier and later lists ; the Hart Hall list is written in a hand distinct from any other in the book and the best of them all. Comparing these lists with the register of degrees, we may assign the Brasenose and S.John's lists to about the year 1566, the Hart Hall list to about 1568. The later lists are frequently imperfect, giving e.g. only the surnames and not the christian names of the men.
8. In Reg. I. 245 is misprinted Hanesee, spelt also ' Hallce.'
40. After Thomas Limberieke, and above the line, a later hand has added [' Cottington, James ; Som. ; gen. fil.']. He was not el. Scholar till 1569. Cottyn- ton, Jieg. I. 283.
44. At the end of the list, after Hewe Colye, has been added in a later hand [' Giles, Thomas, famiihis praesidis '] j and then the entry has been scored out.
I. LISTS OF STUDENTS. 25
BRASENOSE COLLEGE (about 1565) (p. fol. 305).
The Brasenose list is preceded by a list of the first six Presidents, written in two later hands.
[Smith, Matthew; Lancastrensis et Principalis hujus collegii primus.
Hawarden, John ; Lancastrensis et Principalis secundus.
Blanehard, Thomas ; Eboracensis et Principalis tertius.
Haries, Richard ; Herefordensis et Principalis quartus.
Wowell \ Alexander ; Ecclesiae Paulinae Decanus, Principalis quintus.
Singleton, Thomas; Cestrensis, Principalis sextus.]
Of these, Haries occurs in the list itself; and Singleton in the insertion noted below. Blanehard was Principal at the date of the list. The list itself gives only surnames, except in seven cases, viz. numbers 16, 31, 32, 3^' 375 385 98. A later hand has added christian names in many cases, which additions have been distinguished by square brackets [ ]. In some additional cases, I have added the christian name from a comparison of the degree lists ^, enclosing it in angular brackets { ).
The lines of division are from the MS.

Some of them are trivial, some wrong, most are incorporated in his Ath. or Fasti. They have therefore been generally omitted.

JESUS COLLEGE <i57l> (P- fol- 462).
In this list no christian names are given, and there seem to be no College records from which to supply them. It is hardly safe to guess from the degree lists, since names like Price and Jenkins are of frequent occurrence. A later hand has added some christian names, and has inserted two entries ; these are placed within square brackets.

LINCOLN COLLEGE <i570-
As has been noticed above (p. 9 n.) the beginning of the Lincoln College list is missing. The College books supply the under-written list of Fellows for 1571. There is no means of telling whether the Lincoln list was of 156^ or of i57f. If it were of the former date, it may have been destroyed intentionally, as well as the College books of the same date, — most of the then members of Lincoln being expelled for religion.

MAGDALEN HALL <i572> (P. fol. 575)-
In this list there is no mark of division between the list of 1572 and the first part of the Matriculations which follow, and in both the names are written in the same hand. The notices of counties, etc. (here enclosed within square brackets) are possibly in the same hand as the names, but the different appearance of the ink points at least to their being added after the list was written out.

MR. CASE'S SCHOLARS (1583) (P. fol 743).
We have here an early instance of a custom recently re- introduced. By a Statute of 1855, leave was given to Members of Convocation, under certain conditions, to receive into their houses students who should have the same academical status as members of Colleges and Halls. This was in effect a revival of what had been found in Elizabethan Oxford.
On 27 June, 1580, under pressure from the Queen's govern- ment, Convocation ordered that the statutes should be put in force, and that all scholares residing in houses in the town should be brought into Colleges and Halls. On 3 Nov., 158 1, the Chancellor complained to Convocation that a great deal had still to be done in this direction, and that many papists were still in the University under private tutors. On 14 Nov., 158 1, Convocation re-enacted the statutes compeUing residence within the walls of the Colleges and Halls. On I2_^0ct., 1583, Convocation instructed the Vice-Chancellor to enforce the statutes against all persons receiving students into their houses. A special exception was then made in favour of Mr. Case on account of his bodily infirmity, his labours for years in aca- demical studies, and his success in teaching; and he was allowed to receive students on condition that he kept them in his own house and made them attend lectures and sermons, etc.
So again, on 14 Apr., 1584, in consideration of Mr. Balgay's bodily weakness, and his long service in academical studies and teaching, Convocation dispensed Mr. Balgay^from the operation of the Statute 'de scholaribus in collegia et aulas revocandis,'

* We learn from his will (18 Jan. 159I, GG. 190 b, 295 a) that he lived in a house * over against Magd. Coll.' See p. 16.

46 REGISIRUM UNIVERSITATIS OXON.
and allowed him to receive students into his house and teach them, on condition that he kept them in doors at night, and made them attend public exercises and sermons.
There is no record or list of any ' scholares ' of Mr. Balgay, but Case's Scholars have a division of the Matriculation register P. for themselves, beginning on fol. 743. The persons there registered seem frequently to have belonged to Gloc. H., and to Jesus College, in the Matriculation lists of which they are also found. There is some confusion also in the entries for Case and for New Inn Hall (see N. I. H. Matriculations, 1575-1579).
For this John Case, see Ath. I. 685. He had been Fellow of S. Jo., see p. a8. By his will (proved 23 Feb. 11^^) he left *iO;^ to the University new library now to be built and furnished by Mr. Bodley ' (GG. 180 a). The will of his widow Elizabeth Case was proved 27 Mar. 161 2 (GG. 106 a).

DIVISION II.
MATRICULATIONS 1567-1622.
At this point begin the Matriculations, following in each case in the register P., under the head for each College, after the lists already given. Thus^ e.g. the Hart H. list (p. 29) on P. fol. 541 is followed on P. fol. 543 by the Matriculations given below. The contractions used in this part of the volume have been explained in the Preface; where also the system of arrange- ment is fully described. The mark ... indicates that an entry is wanting which is generally given. E. g., on this and next page the day and month of the Matriculation are missing ; and in the matriculation of Gregory Morgan at the foot of p. 48, the county is not given, nor the father's quality, nor the age.
One point it may be well to mention here. In the second register, PP., a head is given not only for 'privilegiati' (tradesmen enjoying the University privileges) but also for 'servientes' (per- sons in the service of Colleges and Scholares). The division is a very serviceable one but it is neglected in the first register, P., where many servants are put into the heads for the Colleges along with ordinary undergraduates. The entry ' Johanna Mayo, vidua, lotrix,' which begins the Exeter Matriculations is obviously different from what we understand by a Matriculation. It is desirable to remove these entries of servants and class them with the privileged ; but it is not altogether easy to do so, since sometimes a servant was a ' scholaris ' and went through the curriculum and took the degree. I have removed those which are obviously entries about servants and classed them with the ' privileged persons ' whose list is given later on.
From this point till 17 Nov., 1581, the sole authority for these names and dates is the Matriculation register P. I have noted at that point how the subscription books begin to correct and supplement the entries in the Matriculation register.
The cross-entries given in angular brackets ( > are found very imperfectly in the Matriculation book. In their present
48

form they are introduced here from the registers of Convocation. Some few dates are conjectured, on the evidence given in the preface, these are put in angular brackets (with a note of in- terrogation, unless otherwise noted), thus : — ( ?).

^ Already printed in Boase, Exet. Coll. Reg., p. 185, in the order in which they are found in the Matric. Reg. They are here given in alphabetical order. The date is rather ' 3° Dec' (i. e. 3) than ' 30 Dec' as in Boase. It clearly involves several years of Matriculations. As has been stated above (p. 33 n.), it must begin about 1572, since several of the names in the list on that page seem identical with those occurring here. The date, 3 Dec. 1575, is in a different ink, and probably was added by a later hand.
